change my win ipod into a mac?

I just bought a new iMac. i've had an ipod since christmas time and have been using it with my windows machine (obviously, since it's a windows ipod). now that i've gotten a mac... i'm trying to decide whether or not it would be a good idea to change my ipod into a mac one. is it worth it?

Yes. :) Do you want any more info? ;)

OK, I'll quit being a smartie. If you switch it to a Mac iPod, you get the benfits of iTunes, the iTunes Music Store, and the use of the iPod the way it was intended with Smart Playlists and all. Sadly, our Windows brethren just don't have it as good as we do!

Blech! Not for long my dear Cate. Playcounts and ratings were added w/the 2.0.1 update. Soooooo Miss High and Mighty ;), we too shall soon be able to bask in the glory of Smartlists and Ratings (as soon as MC9 is ready..soon, real soon).

So, er...*ahem* THERE :D ;)

Call me stupid if you will (actually, don't!) but we, as PC users have smart playlists and ratings already...

I use WMP9 (yeah yeah, I know...) which automatically creates smart playlists like that, such as "recently played" and "favourite on friday evenings" and such things like that. Now with xPlay, if I choose to sync with Windows Media Player, it lets me choose what playlists to sync with.

I can therefore just ask it to sync with my smart playlists. Job done. (WMP9 supports ratings as well).

Although of course I will be getting iTunes for PC when it comes out... :D

Shake, yes, WMP, MC9 has Smartplaylists. But, up until now, you couldn't update your smartlists from what you've played on the iPod.

Also, if you changed the rating on a song on the iPod and then sync'd, that rating change couldn't update your music library.

That's the way iTunes works, but 3rd party programs such as MC9 couldn't make use of that because previous to 2.0.1 coming out Apple had disabled the Playcounts and Ratings feature on WiPods.

So, now, when MC9 gets this finished, each time I sync, whatever songs I've played on the iPod and whatever rating changes I've made will be reflected in MC9's database and all my smartlists will automatically be updated.

So, if I have a smartlist that says, Genre=X, Y & Z, and sort=random, and duration=2 hours and last played > 2 weeks ago and rating >= 4, what I've done on my iPod will be reflected in that playlist.

Get it?

I doubt that Xplay will be able to leverage this as it doesn't actually interface w/WMP9 that much, it's more of a lookup thing.

Maybe they'll get to it.

Ah... I see...

The smart playlists in WMP are driven simply by WMP - that's all I thought the iTunes were. So they're driven by the iPod itself? That's good...
