Description of iPod generations?
Can someone tell me where I can find a description of the different generations of iPod? Some sites mention 2 generations, others 3. I have an older style 10GB Windows iPod - I'm not sure if it's 1st or 2nd generation!
Thanks...

# 1 Re: Description of iPod generations?
I think that Apple was originally saying that the new iPods were the gen 2 iPods, and all of the ones perviously sold were gen 1 iPods, but when they officially released them they were advertised as gen 3 iPods.
So what are the descriptions of each generation. I've heard them described two ways. Iuess the popular one is, gen 1's have the scrollwheel, gen 2's have the touchwheel, and gen 3's have the new button locations. But, I have also heard that the gen 1's are the original 5gb, gen 2's are the 10gb scrollwheels and the all of the touchpad ones, and gen 3's have the new button locations.
I guess I would go with the first one, but I suppose that some may go with the second one.

1)Scrollwheel
2)Touchwheel
3)Touchbuttons
Now there are anomalies. Such as the rereleased 5GB, which included the 2G style headphones and box, but had a scrollwheel and no firewire port cover.

There have actually been four Generations
1) 5 GB Mac Pod, scrollwheel, old buds, no remote
2) 10 GB Mac Pod, scrollwheel, old buds, no remote
3) 5, 10, and 20 GB Mac and PC pods with new earbuds, minor internal changes, improved earphone socket, 10 and 20 GB models with new 'thin' and 'thick' enclosures, non-moving touchpad, included remote and case. 5 GB size unchanged, scrollwheel retained.
4) New stroke-button pods, 10, 15 and 20 GB models.
If forced to divide the models into three gens then it's
A) Moving scrollwheel (5 GB and original Mac 10 GB, and 5 GB PC pods)
B) Touchwheel (Touchwheel Mac Pod and all PC iPods).
c) Touchwheel and buttons
