Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
Soo, I recently (yesterday) got my lovely new 10Gb docking iPod. Now, I have a 1st generation 5Gb, which I've decided to give to a friend of mine for her birthday, along with the case I had, the remote which I bought seperately, etc.
Now, this is a special friend, and I was wondering what I could do to give the iPod a personalised touch. It isn't engraved, and I'd like something permanent. I *would* buy her a new iPod with something engraved on it... but I can't afford it!
A while back I saw a way to view and edit the graphics in the iPod's firmware, and I thought this would be good - change the Apple logo that you see when you switch the iPod on to something personal. This would be near-on permanent, as I don't think Apple will release a 2.0 for the old iPods. Does anyone know how to do this?
I'm open to suggestions! How could I give my iPod a personal touch so it'll make an extra-special gift?

I guess you could write something on the bottom of the iPod in permanent marker, but it would be kinda tacky.
# 2 Re: Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
Is she a 'real-special' person?!:D
you gonna empty out all the songs/files right? If so, can you create a special playlist folder or something, and then put one (or more) of your favorite song (which gotta mean something) for this 'real-specia' person!!
or... go take a one of those small sticker pictures and put it on the back...

This could get very dirty very fast.:D
# 4 Re: Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
Look at the various threads which show you how to dismantle the pod, or change the battery. Having looked at them, if you're confident that you could take the back off, then it would be easy to get the back suitably engraved.
# 5 Re: Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
This might sound really corny, but you could record a message for her with a mic on your desktop and then put it on the iPod. But I like the idea of getting it engraved.
# 6 Re: Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
When I bought a flash MP3 player as a Christmas present for a friend, I made it a point of finding out what my friend's favorite music was and putting copies of it on the player.
Why would you give a friend a gift that they can't use until they go through the 'chore' of setting it up first?
I say, load up your old iPod with music and create a few special playlists before you make a present of it. Just remember, the more time and thought you put into this gift, the more it will be appreciated!
# 7 Re: Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
Thanks for all your ideas!
The only problem about a recorded message is that I hate the sound of my own voice recorded. Also, it'd be nigh on impossible to make a recorded message without it being cheesy.
Putting a favourite song or songs on there is a good idea, and I have some of the music she loves, so... yup, I think that's gonna happen.
I'd love to get in engraved. I'll ask at my local (heh - its 8 miles away) town to see if I can find a place that'll engrave it.
Anyway, so far so good - bring on any more ideas!
# 8 Re: Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
Oh, kamj12... she's special enough for me to be giving her an iPod! Yes, it's second hand, but I'm a student and its the best I can do.
Timmy Yak... lol, let it get dirty... I'm open minded!
# 9 Re: Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
Ok then. Here we go. First idea I have is to deliver it to her NAKED! Then you will know how good of a freind she is.:D
More to come...

Everyone does...except politicians, college professors...and my sister.

Yeah, I guess I kind of thought that was what we were going for. Switching into non-cheesy mode...
There are those plastic things tha you can print a design on and wrap around your iPod. You could do a custom design on those to personalize it. That is, of course, if you (er, she) would like that around your iPod. I personally wouldn't but if you do it might work.
You could also find a way to personalize the case you give her. I know of several places that can put raised letters on leather. Or if it's a cloth case, some people can sew it on.

Make little 'easter-eggs' too...
Like in the browse menu:
Artist: Thisiswhat
Album: I think of you
Song: listenandfindout
And then either some sort of clip from a movie or from TV:
(here some suggestions:)
'smokin - the mask
ay caramba - the simpsons
...(you get the idea)
or add jokes, etc etc and funny contacts, calender entries...
just make it personal and long-lasting
# 12 Re: Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
Im hoping your going to clean it up too. Get rid of all the scratches and marks on it, to make it look less second hand ;)
Also make sure you gift wrap it and tie a bow around it ;)

That's a wonderful idea! Wow... There are few addresses of places I could put there that would mean something... :D

Yup, I fully intend to clean it up as much as I possibly can. Also, plain silver wrapping paper and a big pink bow! :p
Bluecamel: I also like your case ideas - maybe I can make a case of soft denim and sew her name onto it. In fact, I might make myself a soft denim case - I think it'll be a good case for the iPod!
The suggestions so far have been amazing... keep them coming!
# 14 Re: Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
Ok don't like that one.
How about this. When you are about to give it to her say "I love you". And then when she says, "What did you just say?", you pull out the iPod and say "Look at what I got you!" Things will be all good!:D
# 15 Re: Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
is it a good idea of giving a second hand ipod to someone 'special'?what if she found out about it?
# 16 Re: Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
Kenndac,
Are you going to post pictures of what you do? It would be cool to see (unless, of course, you do the naked thing - I don't want to see that).

Gotcha, something like:
Name: Doc. Love
Address: The back seat of my car
Appointment: '24h a day, 7 days a week
Maybe?

Well, that's not really a problem. She owns a Windows PC without Firewire, and I'll have to put in a Firewire card for her to use the iPod. I can't really sneak into her house and stealthily install a card. So, unfortunately, I had to ask her about it - she knows she'll be getting a second hand one, and is still over the moon about it. However, she only thinks she's getting my iPod - not with all the 'special' things along with it.

Yup, sure thing. I've already made a very scruffy looking draft of the type of case I'll make, and I've attached a couple of pictures of it. The final thing will have holes cut in it for the ports, and her name sewn on the front.
lol, and don't worry about the nakedness thing - she's a 'special' sperson, but we're not a couple - nakedness isn't something that happens with us!

Another pic...
# 20 Re: Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
Cool case.
# 21 Re: Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
As probably one of the few married females actively reading this thread, I just thought I'd offer my comments.
First, I'm impressed with the suggestions here (even the 'deliver it naked' one -- that shows forethought!) Hell, I can't even sew, so the denim case would probably have been enough to blow me away.
;)
"Back in the days" before iPods, DVDs or even CD players -- aka, when I was a teenager -- one of the most meaningful things I received from the guy who later became (and still is) my husband were custom casette tapes. The equivalent of those are custom playlists on the ipod. Not only can you assemble her favorite songs for her, you could do what my hubby did and have themed music collections.
I still have the tapes I received when we were dating -- a couple "romantic times" mixes, of course, but also collections of songs for "road trips/long drives" we took, relaxing sets for after "stressful days" (finals, back then; long, hard days at work, now); collections that brought back "memories of firsts in our lives" (easy to do even if you haven't known each other that long. In fact, the firsts are probably easier to remember! <grin>)
Anything that shows you put your thought and time into preparing the gift for her is gold.
# 22 Re: Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
This isn't really on-topic, but one of the reasons that I'm getting an iPod is to be able to re-create some of the mix tapes I have from highschool. I have some that are too long to fit on a CD, and I don't want to lose them, so having them on an iPod is perfect. I still love these old tapes, so I think that custom mixes as a gift are a really good idea.

# 24 Re: Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
I can attest to the success of a a "special" playlist of meaningful songs that reflect your relationship.
A couple of years ago I burned my wife a CD for her birthday. On it were songs from our own CD collection that marked milestones in our relationship. I did custom jewel case art for her. (I'm a photographer & graphic artist). The whole project cost me less than $20, even if you factor in the photography.
The CD was meant as a compliment to a portable CD player that I gave her to make her commute more bearable. Well the CD was the biggest hit ever... with both her and all the ladies she worked with at the time. I have yet to give her another present that made her as happy as she was to receive that CD.
Go figure.
I think you are entirely on the right track with the custom case. A cople of custom playlists might go over very well too!
# 25 Re: Giving an iPod to a friend... what to do?
WOW, that case rawks!
How did you make it? It looks smashalishious!
I wan't a cool customised case like that too!
Did you use a special dseign pattern?
btw, (off-topic) my band had our first concert yesterday and it was soooooo COOOOOOL!!! There were several other bands before us, and we just blew them outta the water! Good thing they were soooo bad!

I made it by getting the dimensions of the iPod off the internet somewhere and designing my own case, then sitting for several hours sewing it all together. I've now designed mk. 2 - it has holes in the top for the headphones and hold switch, and for the docking iPods it has a hole in the bottom too.
I've done designs for the old AND docking 'pods because I'm gonna make one for my docking iPod too. If there's enough demand, I'll make some for people (the stitchwork is much beter than in the photo) for a small fee - but I'll personalise it too - I can put names, simple pictures, etc on there if you like. Oh, and you can specify what access holes you want too.
Actually - I'll start a new thread in the 'gear' section asking if people would want such a case!
