Questions about the new iPods!
Hi,
I'm glad I fell in this forum after extensive search about the oh great One (iPod). Congrats on the site, it's great looking! ;)
I tried to find answers to my questions but yet I couldn't, so I am turning back to you guys. I would like to buy an iPod (the new ones) but I have some concerns about it. I need to sell my extrnal HD first before buying the iPod so I need to be sure about these (AFAP):
1- How about that special HD in the iPod? It says you can share files with PC an Mac with it, but can I install Mac applications on it, like Mac OSX and others?
2- Will the HD mount on OSes like Mac OS 9.2, Mac OSX, Windows NT, Windows XP?
3- Can I use it to play music while I use it as an HD?
4- Does it recharge when I use it as an HD?
5a- That USB & FireWire cable... could I only bring it to plug to a PC sometimes (with the USB port), and the FireWire port to the Mac?
5b- Is the USB2 cable backward compatible with USB1 on a PC?
5c- Is the USB2 cable backward compatible with USB1 on a Mac?
That's all folks! If you could only answers some of them, I would like to hear from you before asking those dumb sellers at that faked Apple Store in my city... Thanx a lot!

5c. is NO. I called Apple and they said there will be NO USB support for mac pods and older pods without the dock connector.

Let's wait and see until the cable is available. They (Apple) have also stated that you can't use a Windows iPod on a Mac...forever...and that's so far from reality it's not even funny. Their responses are what they support...which is a far cry from what is possible.

The iPod hard disk isn't specified for continuous use as far as I remember. I also seem to remember reading that it was not recommended to install an OS on the iPod hard disk even though it would work for that reason.
The iPod gets very hot when the hard disk is in continuous use so be careful if you are considering using it for anything other than playing music and the odd file transfer.
The iPod isn't intended to act as a replacement for an external hard disk.

Phil: Yeah ok... I'll just not hook it up all day. I'll be carefull, trust me ;)
mongoos150: it's ok... but it sucks cause if I wanna show some files on old non-FireWire card macs, then it means I won't be able to? That sucks... :(
Keep them going! Thanx guys!
