I dropped my 30 gig ipod
Yup, I was walking into work on Tuesday, and I dropped it in the parking lot. Initially it seemed fine, just a couple tiny bumps, but then a couple hours later after successfully playing 1 song, it died, completely. I was pretty devastated.
I bought the ipod at best buy with the insurance for $40...and man did it pay off. After i begged the kid at the counter, he agreed to give me a new one instread of shipping mine off to be looked at. Brand new 30 gig in the box...what a relief.
Moral of the story? If you're going to buy an Ipod and live in the US...go get it at Best Buy...or another place which offers insurance. By Spending an extra $40 for insurance, I saved $460. My Ipod broke from a 3 foot drop...I couldn't believe it was so delicate...

Glad you got a replacement! Delicate though? Three feet onto concrete for such a small, component-packed hard drive is a pretty intense shock, IMHO. Did that $40 include medical treatment for your ensuing heart attack? lol.

oh man...at first i didn't think much of it...it really wasn't a big fall, but the heart attack nearly occurred when my ipod stopped playing altogether...i must have re-booted it 15 times.
I do feel they're delicate...they should be able to withstand some kind of drop, but from now on I'm going to be Xtra careful.

Bougth the ipod armor a couple of days ago.when the ipod is in it you could drive over it with a car and nothing will happen.

Yeah, they are kinda delicate, I do have to concede. I think you just got unlucky, because I've heard several stories of much worse drops resulting in no damage. One poor guy fell down the stairs, broke his arm, dropped the ipod down the whole stairs, and I believe he said it was fine.
I'd rather break my arm, frankly. I have health insurance, no iPod insurance. lol.

and btw...the ipod is version 2.0.1 and the backlight is VERY blue

Did you just tell the guy you dropped it? Because I didn't think those warranties covered user-responsible damage...

I was rushing to an interview on Tuesday, flung my bag over my shoulder and watched in horror as my iPod (in its Apple case) sailed out of the side pocket. The pod flew about 15 feet at a height of about 6 feet, then struck the macadam car park with a resounding thump.
At this point my heart stopped.
I went to inspect the carnage, sod's law dictates that it would b100dy hit the ground on the only corner not covered by the case. It struck hard enough to cause the casing to pop open.
Heart still not beating yet, I removed it from the POS case Apple supplies and press a button... Nada (blood pressure now at the point at which it bursts those machines doctors place on your arms)
I then realised the case was slightly cracked open, I gave it a firm push, heard it snap back into place, pressed a button and after 10 seconds or so it sprang back into life as if nothing had happend.
My heart started again and the sun came out. I have a nasty scratch in the top right corner of both the Metal and Plastic, but there doesn't seem to be any other lasting damage.
I have now rechristened my pod Indestructipod. My conclusion being that they are tougher than they look.

Ps I still wouldn't advise testing them too hard, I think I was very very lucky.

no way...i told him it just stopped working. Honestly, it should not have broke from the 3 foot fall that it took...so i didn't feel bad lying about it. There was barely a tiny dent on it too, so they didn't question anything.

...I dropped mine yesterday putting it in my briefcase, am still petrified that it's damaged. I turned it on, it seemed to play fine, but when I hit FF, it would not respond. Shut it off, went to another playlist, it let me FF through about a half-dozen songs. Almost afraid to try it today.

Good for you. I got the same thing at Best Buy, and hopefully I won't be cashing in on it any time soon. Closest call I ever had was a 5 foot high drop from the top of my big screen TV onto the tile floor below. (Dang bleeper)... [Urinating] blood, I went to check the iPod and it was still function like a trooper. God bless it.

BB claims that if your dog chews it up, the insurance is still good, however they usually make you do a song and dance about sending in for a return coupon then you have to send the unit in. CompUSA has the same insurance, but they replace it on the spot in the store no questions asked as it should be. Also remember BB will not refund cash over $100.00. They send you a check which takes two weeks.
Sorry to hear about your pod. Glad it all worked out.
