20g ipod or 3G ipods?!?!?!?

hey folks, i cant decide on whether to get a 20g ipod or the 3G models. ive read that some people been having problems with their 3G ipods and they're NEW. i mean, if im gonna shell out $500 i want it to last fairly long. I dont need a $500 headache or paper weight.

Also, ive seen the 20g ipod for $299 at macwarehouse.com, but its the Mac version, is it possible to convert it to pc version and how would you go about doing so?

to those people who has both the 2nd generation and 3rd gen ipods, which do you think is better to get, longeavity wise?

i would really appreciate any feedbacks.

There's some thoughts on the merits of both at:

I've had both, I prefer the gen3 by a slight margin. Keep in mind the two are more similar than different.. And yes, you can convert a macpod to a winpod--there are instructions on how to do that here at the lounge.

gen2 plusses: Price, battery life (about 12 hours), I prefer the old style button layout, 1.2.6 is relatively bug free firmware.

minuses: size, lack of a true line out (using the headphone jack is ok, but not nearly as good as the line out on the gen3 dock), after AAC support, probably no more firmware updates.HD spins when connected to computer--no problem when synching, but you shouldn't charge this way--not a big issue, just need to remember to use the wall adapter to charge.

gen3: size, OTG, dock with a true line out (very noticeable improvement in sound quality when using an external source), continued firmware updates, at least until the next gen is out, can charge from the computer without HD spinning.

Minuses: battery life (about 8 hours), I personally like the old style button layout better, there is a "lag" on occasion when skipping over songs on occasion--although I suspect this will be fixed with a firmware update.

It really depends on your needs. If size isn't an issue, and the extra battery life and price is, go with the 20gigger, which is a better value IMHO than the 30 gigger. If you're going to frequently use a line out, or want a smaller player, or more HD space, go with the thirty. Either way, they're both fantastic players.
