Skipping protection : IPOD 15GB

On a 3 week old 15 GB Ipod I can usually get only ~ 10-15 minutes of skip protection on my runs. It is advertised as being 20 to 25 minutes on the web site, how much skip protection are you getting on average?

it has a 32 mb CACHE.

depends how big the mp3s are you're playing.

And you might want to consider placing the iPod somewhere else on your body. Skipping is something you definitely want to avoid. You could permanently break the iPod if you jar it too much and at the wrong time (i.e. when the read arms of the HDD are doing their business).

Me, I'd never jog w/my little guy. Get an MP3 flash player for that...yes, I know Apple says it's for the active lifestyle. But driving's active, that's as much jarring as I would put mine through. ;)

Heard that, that is why I got an extended warranty (2 years). I already have to replace this one as it doesn't meet the spec for battery lifetime and shock protection (my mp3's are encoded at 128) and my remote is already broken

Despite what Apple says, I really don't think ANY hard-drive-based MP3 player is suitable for jogging. It may work for a while, but the bad sectors would eventually add up and the thing would stop working altogether.

Of course, if you have a 2-year warranty, that lessens the risk quite a bit.

My iPod locks up like clock work on my morning walk/run at 20 minutes into it. Could emptying the buffer be causing this?

The screen looks like it is playing (arrow in the upper corner) but the time is stopped. After several minutes (20+ minutes) it finally goes to sleep. The only way to get it to come back up is to hook up power to it.

Any ideas?

As the buffer empties out and reloads (approx. every 20 minutes), it accesses the HDD to get another 32 MB of tunes. If you're walking and bouncing at this point, the iPod will lock up.

Again, the suggestion is to either a) slow down every 20 minutes (and since that's not very feasible, I recommend...) b) try putting the iPod on different parts of your body where it's less likely to be jarred.

Hi ! Mine (brand new 20GB) is doing exactly the same. I contacted Apple, and they gave me a link to a document saying that there is 20 min. skipprotection on the iPod, and that it is more than other mp3 players...great! But my iPod skips anyway, cause im running for at least 30 min...! So it looks like, that you have to stop up every 20 min, and wait for the cache to fill up again..! Come on Apple do something about it.

saw a recommendation in some other thread to hold iPod in hand or attach to arm -- that waist mounting causes more jarring. - for what it is worth.

Try what robert suggested. You guys are walking a dangerous line with this jarring and SKIPPING stuff, regardless of if you have a warrenty or not - you're gonna be ####ED when your iPod dies on you.
