iPod not recognized in desktop, iTunes or PC. Tried everything!
I've had an original 5 GB iPod for a little over a year now, and have never really had any significant problems, even after using it almost daily as both a player and to swap files to and from the office.
Suddenly one day after unmounting it from an early model G3 with OS 9.2, my iPod stopped responding to being conected to any of my computers. It still works perfectly, being able to play all songs and hold a full charge, but there's just no way for it to appear on the desktop or iTunes, or even on a PC with EphPod.
I tried doing a reset and nothing. I tried going into forced firewire mode with a reset and then pressing FF + RW but I never get the "Do not disconnect". Instead I just get the "Ok to disconnect". I tried doing this plugged in to three different G4s, then the AC adaptor, then a Vaio PC and nothing. As a last resort I drained the battery and recharged, but still nothing.
Now, the firewire cable works fine, as do the ports on all the different computers, for I've tried using different firewire devices on them with no problem. Even using another cable on the iPod yields no results.
Does anyone know if there's a way around this problem? Or am I stuck with an un-updatable iPod? I've long run out of warranty, and living in Mexico, I'm a bit uncomfortable with having it sent for repairs.
Please, someone help... I have whole new Nick Drake album to upload :(

Oh, I feel for you...not being able to upload the Nick Drake album.
Sadly, it sounds like you've done everything to isolate the issue..and the result you don't want to hear is that it's probably the iPod.
You could send it in, but for what they charge, you're better off getting a 3gen 10 giger. It's almost the same price.
Or you could bicker w/them that 1 year is too soon for it to wear out (the firewire portion that is).

Thanks for your reply, Adam.
I read somewhere that the cause for non-docking iPods could be a loose connector on the FireWire port, and that welding the loose connectors would take care of the problem. The solution sounds simple enough, except for having to open the iPod.
Is there a good, safe way of going about this? Or should I just bite the bullet, not risk it and keep enjoying the thousand songs already there? I can't really afford a new iPod right now, or send it in to Apple...
But boy would I love a 3rd generation...

I have the same problem, exactly. I have found a website which shows you how to disassemble the iPod, here: http://deep.urbanturban.no:16080/ipod/disassembly/
I think i'll give it a try.
Where did you read the soldering theory?

Right here:

The theory sounds plausible, and the solution simple enough, so I think I may give it a shot. There's also an article there about burnt-out components on the board, which would mean I'm screwed if it's that, but I'll pray to the music gods for it being the solder points.
Anyway, good luck!
