Old iPod Sounds Better
I have been the proud owner of an original 5Gb iPod with mechanical scroll wheel for a number of years. I've loved it to pieces and it's been great to me but I recently decided that I would take the plunge and upgrade to a new 3rd generation 30Gb model. Having received it just the other day, I have to say that whist it looks amazing and the extra disk space is great, it doesn't sound as good as my original one. Sounds like they've changed the head phone amp in there and it just doesn't sound as good. the top end's gone all soft and it generally sounds more sibilant.
I am a sound engineer and so am constantly critically listening. Even so, it strikes me that there is quite a big difference between the two. I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this with the new iPods or if maybe there might be a problem with mine.
thanks :-)

Hmmm... I have owned a gen2 and gen3, and I can't tell the difference--other than when hooking up to an external source, the line out on the gen3 dock sounds signigicantly better than using the headphone jack, as we had to do in the past..

Could this be due to the gen3 EU volume limitation, discussed elsewhere? I see both people complaining are from the UK.

A couple of weeks ago I bought my Spanking new 30gb ipod, as soon as I opened it i was smitten it is a thing of true buety, but i also felt that with the headphones provided and the volume limiter #### the eu the sound was below what i was expectin. This is how I sorted it and it now sounds as good as i personally expected. Firstly sort out the volume limit by selectin my whole itunes collection and then selecting get info and then the options tab
and adjusting the volume to 160% which is enough to provide the sound I want and does not distort as far as I can tell but i do have my tunes encoded on the highest possible.
and then the real solution was to buy another pair of headphones that
1. gave the best headphone sound ive ever heard
2. is the most comfortable thing ive ever put into my ears which as much as u might love the ipods the headphones are feel like ur puttin a saucer in ya ear..
the one i bought was the sony mdr-ex71 the latest version of the sony earbuds available in the uk

I do believe it's a result of the inexplicable EU volume limiter, as a buddy of mine has a 2nd Gen and it doesn't seem to sound any different to me than my 3rd Gen.
