how do the new ipods detect button presses?
since there are no buttons to press in, how does the ipod detect a "press"? is it done by heat detection?

that is somewhat true. The scroll pad in the center is the same type of material that a mouse pad on a lap top works. It detects heat or "electrostatic" which inatemate objects do not project...such as an eraser tip, try it sometime...

Poorly.
It works great for me!

It usually works--but try it with sweaty fingers at the gym...Then it can be a problem. Also, there can sometimes be a huge lag in the time you press the button to the time it responds when moving to the next song--my gen2 never did this. Took me awhile to get used to--I'm sure it has something to do with the buffer--but I would click to the next song, nothing would happen, then I click it again, and again, then it goes three songs forward instead of one...Just got to be aware of the 3-5 second delay that occurs occasionally. Hopefully this will be fixed in a future firmware update. I prefer the old button style over the new, but I suppose in the long run the new ones will be less prone to break...
