Backlight Doesnt Work! Help!

I just got my iPod, and the backlight is not working! When I turn it on the buttons glow, but the screen is not lit. I have reset the iPod by holding down play/pause and menu several times, gone into a pitch black room etc... Am I missing something? Please help!

There's no Apple store near me so I have to mail it back and wait another two weeks...AAGGHHH!!!!! The Apple guy gave me this website (depot.info.apple.com) where I can send for a repair box, but three quarters through the process it asks you to select the type of service, and the drop down menu has no choices! Im gonna have to wait till tomorow and do it over the phone.
Also I noticed the thing about it stopping a song 30 seconds through...Thats a serious bug. Whatever happened to that guy who was talking to Apple about this (he was also sending sample files that were having the problem to the guy)?

this may sound stupid but try it in the dark, because they backlight in daylight really makes only a very very slight change. lol its statibng the obvious, but i had the same problem and i took mine back, only for the man to hold it under the desk and show me, im stupid.

I'd try a hard reset first (this won't erase your data):

Plug into your power source, then press Menu and Play at the same time until the Apple logo comes on.

Factory settings are for the backlight to not come on automatically - I take it you have fiddled with the light timer settings?

well if the buttons' light come on but not the screen i think it's quite a clear sign that something's not too right.. but yeah you should check it under dark conditions and see just to be doubly sure

the skipping of the song in the middle of the track is usually a sign of a mp3 with a faulty encoding bit, if you are willing to re-rip the file it should work, granted, that's troublesome but firmware 2.1's not coming anytime soon it seems...

as for the returns, i'm afraid that's just a casualty of being far away from an apple shop, it's really a pain when you have to ship things back and waaaiit.

I tried it in a pitch black room, I did a hard reset, I turned on the default setting, I tried about every thing possible with the Apple tech. and he said it is definately defective (like I needed him to tell me). So now I have to wait another 2 weeks! I am so ticked. Oh well. Also the battery is only lasting me like 5 hours with extra features turned off, and about every fifth song is skipping after about 30 seconds of play. I hope the new 'pod they send me works better...
