Available Capacity on New iPod
I am recently the proud owner of a new 30gb iPod!
After waiting for nearly 4 weeks from the UK Apple Store I actually found a department store near me that had just got them into stock. A quick phone call cancellation, ?100 more spent (had to plead with the wife that it was worth it for the 30gb) and here I am.
Having not really ventured into the MP3 arena before - relied on my trusty Sony NetMD - I can say that I am delighted.
However, when I go to settings on the iPod, both the capacity and available read 27.8gb. I have already ripped and transferred about 5gb as well as some non-music files for storage.
Any ideas?

This is normal.
My 5GB iPod only has 4.6gb available.
This FAQ ( http://www.ipodlounge.com/faqs_more.php?id=96_0_10_0_C) will explain it.

Maybe I wasn't explicit but I think you've missed my point.
I understand how the 27.8gb is calculated.
My question is that the capacity on iPod is 27.8gb. I now have 1,125 songs as well as about 5gb of other files and I still have 27.8gb available. ie none of the capacity appears to have been used as it is still all available.
Any one else get the same problem and know how to fix it?

maybe this (http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=windowsgeneral&action=display&num=1052249052&start=1) is of some help. otherwise try this (http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=ipodgeneral&action=display&num=1043853759&start=3) one, this one (http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=windowsgeneral&action=display&num=1042662549&start=1) doesn?t seem to help too much, i guess :D, neither does this (http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=techsupport&action=display&num=1042433399&start=3) one.
try searching about it yourself in the old forum database.
it?s really late and i?m going to bed. i?ll give it another go tomorrow.

TheDaddy,
Sorry mate, it was getting a bit late for me - "mrm" has linked you to the places to read about it on the old forum so give those a try first.

mrm - thanks for the links. It would appear that it might be a hardware problem and I'll just have to live with it.
I can check the memory by looking at the properties of the E:drive in Windows Explorer if I'm desperate to know how much space iPod has.
I did search the forums but clearly missed the old forums.

no prob, daddy! :)
send apple an email. maybe it?s a bug they?ll acknowledge. that way the problem could be solved with the next firmware upgrade.

my 10gb ipod did that, but after restoring the firmware it went back to functioning normally.
but apparently the fixability of this problem varies from ipod to ipod, so good luck getting it sorted.
