From Win to Mac
Hey,
I've been reading alot tha if you have a windows-formatted iPod, you could plug it into a mac and it will read it perfectly. Cool!!
My question is, when you plug it in and transfer, does it fomatt it to a macpod?
# 1 Re: From Win to Mac
It doesn't format it to a Mac iPod but I wouldn't plug it in to a Mac if I were you.
I had a 20Gb (gave it to my Fianc?e) and now own a 30Gb, and I tried this on both. I plugged a Windows formatted iPod into my iBook and it did read all of the files. I then transfered a single song to it, and the song played without issue. However, that was the only song that would play. All the other tracks, although still listed on the iPod, wouldn't play.
There may be a way to use a Windows formatted iPod on both a Mac and PC, but after that experience I stopped looking...

Maby you had a bad experience. I have a 15 GB iPod formatted with windows (I use Ephpod). I plug my iPod into my new iMac sometimes to charge it and to play music off it in iTunes. It doesn't change any of the iPod's settings, it is perfectly fine to use it with a Mac. It will not format unless you specifically tell it to.

Different users have had different experiences with this. For some it's worked well, for others, not so well.

Yes, it will play the music when plugged into a Mac, but have you tried to add a track to the iPod with your iMac?
I agree that just plugging it in will do nothing, and that it won't format the iPod unless you tell it to. However, I'm talking about adding new music to it as well, basically use it as it was intended, but on both platforms.
I never said that mine was reformatted, just the tracks that were on it wouldn't play after I transfered a new track to it using my iBook.

Indeed, adding a track to it won't work. For that you need to have the different file system (HFS+).

Well... a couple of weeks ago, I took my Win 3G 15 gig iPod to my brother's and hooked it to his Mac G3 running OS 9.2 with iTunes 2.1.
iTunes saw my library on the iPod and I was able to use it to rip a CD he had and add the mp3s to my iPod. Everything worked fine on the iPod after that.
I later used Ephpod to copy those mp3s back to my 2000 machine and i was able to sucessfully play at least two of those tracks in Winamp and Musicmatch (I've been using MM for tag editing and initial playlist building).

That's crazy. Must be because it's an older mac with an older version of iTunes.

well, my other brother recently got a G4 with OS X and iTunes 4 on it so I'll have to try it on his machine sometime.
What's the worst that can happen? I have erase and reload my iPod? BFD...

The only way t "rip" your files from the PC to the mac is to copy all of them in windows explorer as .mp3 files and transfer them over (in HDD mode).
JYoung:
If it works it'll be a miracle! I have a brand new iMac 1GHz (768 RAM)... It's totally decked out with all the latest stuff. It doesn't work because it is a windows formatted iPod. If it works though, you'll be really special!

this happend to me this weekend, i plugged my new 15 gig 3rd gen into a friend of mine's g4 ibook, ituunes saw things fine, played a couple of tracks, unplugged the pod, and NOTHING WOULD PLAY ANYMORE! all the files were still there but it wouldn't play any of them, i was highly upset since i was in the middle of a 4 day rode trip and had another 8 hours of driving ahead of me, heh
oh well, i i'm resyching it now after formating, should be fine

I had the same experience as Rich and The Iconoclast with my 2nd Gen 20 gig iPod (formatted for Win) and my brother's G4. The G4 saw the playlists OK and even played part of a song, but then after unplugging the iPod all of my playlists showed the songs, but when I hit play it just scrolled thru the song titles without playing and audio.
If anyone figures out the root cause of this issue and a workaround, pls post it here!
# 14 Re: From Win to Mac
I don't know of a work around but I tried hooking up my WinPod to an iBook running OS X 10.2. My brother accidently launched iTunes and it appeared to wipe all my music off the WinPod.
Would this have been because of the autosync function?

# 15 Re: From Win to Mac
I frequently switch my iPod from my PC to my Mac with absolutely no problems. All music is fine, settings are fine, etc... Also I never touched any special settings (auto sync for example).
# 16 Re: From Win to Mac
Has anyone tried to use gtkpod on a mac to access a windows-formatted ipod? Though I haven't tried this, it seems like it should work if you have both a mac and pc and don't want to go through the trouble of reformatting your pod to play nicely with a mac.
