Sometimes those Belkin firewire cards are hit and miss. I would suggest putting the firewire card in another PCI slot (the second one or so). Do you have a gen2 or gen3 iPod?

I can agree on some instances mainly with anything before Windows 2000. Personally I have had great success with Windows XP. Granted I really don't like Microsoft's buisness practice and I really wish my wife would let me buy a Mac. So, I make due. Windows can be frustrating at times, but with close to 95% of the market share for desktop use, it looks like we are all stuck unless we have the scratch for a Mac or until the Linux community gets their act together. Those guys are close but I won't get in a platform discussion here.

you might want to search the old and new forums for firewire card issues. A lot of these problems have been already solved, and might help you debug your problem a little more.

Good Luck!

I use the Adaptec 4300 which is awesome, no problems whatsoever! It is a little pricey ($50) but I thought it was worth it. Also, they say any card with a VIA chipset is good.

aight... if this thing doesnt work tomorrow ill prolly pick up that one and return it if it doesnt work, im pretty sure its a problem with the card compatibility though, cus if it didnt work at all, it wouldnt even give me power, thats why i think it just wont read with the motherboard

Todd's right on w/the Adaptec. Also, remember that providing power to the iPod is pretty much a no-brainer for the card. That's just straight juice going from the bus through the card.

Writing/Reading data, that's an entirely different matter.

And also remember that the iPod a lot picky than other devices (like DV cameras).

The only thing you can really do is make sure you have Service Pack 1 installed. XP has the best support for firewire already, so your good there, though they did fix a couple minor issues in SP1 from what I remember.

But the Belkin cards are hit and miss as Todd points out. 'Specially the ones from Apple (go figure).
