Wav files vs MP3 Files

Hello,
It seems that when I download one of my CD's to the computer, and load it onto my ipod, it is using up an inordinate amount of space, like 40 mb per song. Do I need to convert these wav files to mp3's to conserve space?
THanks,

I was under the impression that wav files took a comparable amount of space compared to that of a mp3 file. I would say try it with a few files and see how it turns out.

P.S. Where in Tucson are you? I'm on the Northwest side (Oro Valley)

Hey man,
I'm at Oracle and Ina. I work a lot in the Oro Valley area. Whereabouts are you?
How do you convert them? I thought they were similar too, but my storage space is dropping fast.

I just went back and took a look at this, and for some reason, my downloads have suddenly gone from an average 4 mb to average 40 mb. Have I inadvertantly screwed with a setting. This is weird.
Thanks for any insight to my problem.

Yes, yes by god yes! You have to compress the files to MP3 or AAC to save space on the pod. The wav file is just the track straight from the CD *uncompressed*. Unless your goal is to listen to wav files you should be encoding you files to MP3 or AAC. If your using Windows AAC is a pain in the caboose so stick with MP3.

Thanks Anthraxx,
I managed to figure that out in the options folder. I don't know how my settings got changed, but I got alarmed when I noticed my drive space dropping like a stone.

rt:

What you are seeing seems about right. MP3s encoded at "typical" bitrates have file sizes about 1/10th of the original (WAV) file.

I would say you don't really NEED to encode your WAVs, unless you actually care about getting 7000 songs on your ipod. ;)

Russ-
I was afraid of that. WAV is uncompressed. Yikes!

I live in Rancho Vistoso. Cool to have a fellow lounger so close!
