Dell Offering of June 26th

Just received an email from Dell about the order I put in for a 15g ipod on June 26th that had an approximate ship date of July 8th. Its been delayed until August 19th! I know that sometimes companies get overwhelmed by orders, but that is one heck of a delay!

I just recieved the same email. I can't wait that long so here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to just go to BestBuy and buy one with my credit card use it and love it, then when my Dell one comes just go and return it at BestBuy for a full refund. Will that work?

Same here. I Just cancelled the order and got a 10GB from amazon for $300 with $50 rebate (for amazon.com purchases).

After being a Dell customer for more than 7 years, it would be the last time i purchased from them.

First, I'll say that I my order is also delayed and expected to ship August 19th.

I wouldn't blame Dell for not shipping out these units quickly in the sense that I'm sure they got innundated with orders as soon as word got out about the deal. I'm sure they actually ran out of stock at some point and are awaiting more from Apple.

How can Dell possibly make money selling a unit that, in the case of the 15 gig model, is $85 (or over 20%) less than regular price? I don't know what deal they have with Apple, but if I were Apple, I probably wouldn't be killing myself to get units to Dell. It's possible Apple is making 20% less than elsewhere by selling to Dell.

I don't defend Dell for being a victim of it's own "success" in selling iPods. After all, if Dell didn't want us to buy them, it shouldn't have sold them.

Dell just did a bad job in estimating when these units would ship. I, for one, did not hold my breath. I've heard about shipping delays with these iPods and knew that my order would either ship immediately, or in a few weeks (or a few months, which has come to pass).

Your recourse is simple, complain to Dell as you are doing, spread the word, cancel your order and buy your iPod somewhere else. However, I don't see a lot of you doing that. Why? Because of the potential for getting $85 off. Of course, you wouldn't all be complaining quite so loudly if the deal from Dell wasn't quite so good. But no one is holding a gun to your head. The iPod is readily available elsewhere. Go to Amazon and get a $50 gift card. I hope they are not as bad at estimating ship dates, but all models do say "Usually ships within 24 hours".

harharhar..

Yeah I just got off the phone with Dell..

I was told roughly 8000...

YEEEEEEESH...
were they able to tell you what number you were out of that mess??

Good Grief!!!!

I don't know what to say...

couldn't Dell just get Apple to drop ship some Ipods to us??
Well probably not.. Hmmm... Well I will shortly start negotiations for a better deal with Dell, see if I can get a discount.. ectectecte

they have 15gb ipods in stock. they're just not shipping them at the price people bought them at. i called them about 5 days ago asking about the status of the 15gb ipods. i was told that they had two 15gb versions. the first one cost $400 and wasn't going to be shipped out for a month or so, and that the other one was $420 but would ship in 24 hours. apple only makes one 15gb ipod, and dell even confirmed they had the same manufacturer part number. dell is simply not shipping the sold ipods out in hopes that people will cancel their orders, and now they want $420 for an ipod that will ship out in a reasonable amount of time.

DELL SUCKS.

Sorry to hear it, but I have had excellent experience with Dell. They have a completely different customer service strategy with iPods than with their computers it sounds like, because in dealing with them and their computers (ordering, shipping, billing, tech. support) they are wonderful.

Nope. Apple makes the same profit as anywhere else.
Because companies buy from Apple at a fixed price.
Apple doesn't care how much Dell's gonna profit from it.

All:

I am the (at least one of the) one(s) who posted the June 26th deal here. I must say, I was tempted. But I'm gald I didn't bother. I guess it just goes to show: "If something sounds too good to be true . . ."

Ultimately, the market will dictate the situation. Some of those 8000 will cancel and go pay full price elsewhere. Some will wait it out. Either way, Dell gets to use your money long before they deliver, which is good for them. It sounds more and more like a scam to me. Maybe it's some way for them to pump up their sales numbers before the end of the second quarter.

First off, Dell can't use your money as they don't charge your credit. Depending on their accounting, they may or may not be posting it to their books before charging your card.

And for the record, I got my iPod in the May deal a week after I ordered it. I'm sorry other people have to wait but a lot of people got their's without issue.

Jyoung, good to hear the positive post from you in a thread full of negativity towards dell............i'm a dell guy, laptops, axim pda, etc............i've had my share of problems with dell, but in the end they always did right by me, i had to be aggressive at times, but they always left me satisfied................

anyway, i bought my 15 gig ipod over at buy.com, they're selling it for 383 i believe and there's a $20 coupon for buy.com that expires on the 14th i believe,

Buy.com coupon link (http://www.buy.com/retail/coupon.asp?prid=88333601)

anyway, that brings the price down to $363 for a 15 gig ipod with free ground shipping i think.............not a bad deal eh, so if you're not happy with the time it'll take dell to ship to you, exercise your free will and stop whining but shop around and find alternative shops where you can find great deals on a great product

Well guys, I hate to be the one that got the deal, but I did get my 30GB Ipod only 4 days after I ordered it from Dell.

I went to order it when they showed the 10% and $40 off 400 coupon.

It wasn't on the website but I called them and they were able to place the order for me. I was warned that it could take till August to get it.

Guess what? It was on my doorstep yesterday. I waited about a whole 4 days to get it.

Good for you folks that were extremely fortunate enough to get your ipods in a somewhat timely manner. I Salute all of you. I guess I had high expectations thinking that I would get mine at least within a month...

Quit my whining? No I rather take an aggresive stance to get what I want.
I have some Dell products (I am by no means DELL guy).. but this will be the last time I buy Dell. Not because they have shi!!y products. I think they are great. However they have SUCH horrible customer support and this whole mess with the Ipod left a HORRIBLE taste in my mouth... I HATE BEING BURNED!!!

Oh well I do apprecaite many of you posting deals from other etailers... The buy.com seems the best to me so far however I am going to ride this thing out with Dell a bit more.. just to see if I can be one of the lucky blessed folks like the few of you who touts extreme adoration for Dell.

# 25 Re: Dell Offering of June 26th
Salsavibe, you write:
I HATE BEING BURNED!!!
Can I ask exactly how you were burned? I don't recall exact dates, but I do know that I checked Dell's website a day or two after placing my order on June 26that and it said that the iPod would not ship until July 8th. You had the option of cancelling your order and buying elsewhere. Now they say the unit won't ship until August 19th. If you are so intent on getting the iPod, you should compain, order it somewhere else and burn Dell.

Maybe it's my expectation or experience, but I've found many websites to be optimistic about ship dates. Sometimes a product actually ships before the estimated ship date, but often it ships after. This is not unique to Dell but also applies to other stores including Amazon.com (which I consider the standard against which other e-tailers are measured).

Great deals like this spread like wildfire on the 'net. I never really expected to get my unit with this deal quickly. In truth, I ordered 3 iPods from Dell recently. There was actually a $35 off $300 deal a day or two before the $40 off $350 coupon came out. I ordered a 15 gig and a 10 gig and got them both within a week. When the $40 off $350 coupon came out, I ordered another 15 gig and that's the one that's been delayed. So, do I think they're running a scam? No. I honestly think they simply ran out. After all, who stocks 8,000 units of anything?

Yes, my perspective is different because I don't need that last iPod right now, but I was realistic about ship time.

I'm not saying it's OK for Dell to make bad ship date estimates (either intentionally or unintentionally) just because others do it. However, if you've dealt with stores where items were in hot demand, your expectation would be like mine: "Use the estimated ship date as a rough indication, but don't count on it."
dcx693 at 2007-11-15 14:40:51 >
# 26 Re: Dell Offering of June 26th
dcx693,

I'm not defending anyone or flaming Dell.....but this is not the first time that this has happened with Dell. Surely by now they must have some idea how popular their deals are and one would hope, plan accordingly. To advertise an item that originally had a ship date of "on or about July 8" and then delay the item to August 19th is a huge difference. Especially when the said item is available elsewhere and not in short supply.

Just my 2 cents

Dave

# 27 Re: Dell Offering of June 26th
dmarcus48, you're right and I agree. Dell has made some bad moves regarding it's customers. At the same time, I think those customers need to have their expectations in the right place.

Would I go to a big movie like Matrix Reloaded or Terminator 3 (both of which by the way, left much to be desired) on opening night in a major city, walk right up to the box office, expect to buy a ticket, then expect to waltz right in and get a primo seat in the theater? No, because other people probably heard that those movies were out also. And what if the theater was running a discount on those movie tickets? Your recourse? Go to another theater. I know, bad analogy, but it's an example of high demand for a product from one vendor with limited supply.

# 30 Re: Dell Offering of June 26th
that's a horrible analogy. yes movies on opening nights will always be a "limited supply". but how were the people who bought ipods from dell supppose to know that dell couldn't meet the demand. after all, they were told the ipods would ship out within a week.....
torchedlh at 2007-11-15 14:45:50 >
# 31 Re: Dell Offering of June 26th
torchedlh, yes I admitted it was a bad analogy, but with the iPod, you have easy alternatives. You don't even have to call Moviefone to find another theater. Just point your browser to amazon.com or buy.com and place your order. Why let it consume you?

Based on the amount of demand for the iPod, the fact that Dell is just one supplier, and that the deal was very good, I expected lots of people to order them. And they did. I didn't expect 8,000, but still... Given how many people read these boards, as well as other "deal" boards, what did you expect?

Again, let me emphasize I am not defending Dell. They did a bad job. They promised something and, literally, couldn't deliver. They should know better based on past experience. If Dell has not satisfied you as a customer, your best response is to complain and buy your merchandise elsewhere.

Yes, I know we all want our iPods and we want them NOW. But sometimes you can't have your cake and eat it too.

People don't go elsewhere because they are typically getting 15-20% off from Dell and don't want to pay full list price.

The fact that Dell gets backordered from offering these deep discounts is rarely mentioned when people start raging on Dell for having to wait on their product.

Long Story with Happy Ending:

I ordered my 15GB iPod from Dell for $314 on 6/26/03 like a lot of you did. I immediately got a confirmation e-mail from Dell that said my order would ship 'on or before' 7/8/03. On 7/8, I received another e-mail from Dell informing that my order wouldn't ship until 8/19. I wanted to call to complain but didn't have time.

I decided to call Dell on 7/9 to express my dissatisfaction. I spoke to a very nice Dell CSR who apologized for the delay but offered to upgrade my order to overnight shipping for free. I reluctantly decided to keep my order open with them and wait it out even though I wouldn't have my iPod until nearly the end of August (sheesh).

Anyway, I logged into my Dell online order status page this morning and lo'behold it said my iPod shipped yesterday (7/10) at 9am via standard UPS Ground with a tracking number!!!!! Man, I had to rub my eyes to make sure I wasn't hallucinating.

So I called Dell again today and asked why I got UPS Ground instead of Overnight and get this ... without me asking, the CSR offered to give me a FREE accessory of my choice as a conciliatory gesture. Dell doesn't carry any iPod accessories, so I ended up chosing a SimpleTech 128mb SD memory card for my Tungsten C - worth about $60.

So in summary - Dell shipped my iPod 2 days later than original promised ship date of 7/8 so I only waited about 2 weeks, I paid only $314 no tax free shipping, and I got a free $60 SD memory card in the process.

Ahhh, life is good... and Dell is not that bad after all.

So I guess the moral of the story is good things come to those who are patient.

All I'm saying is that unlike the folks who went ballistic on Dell, I was 'prepared' to wait 2 months for my iPod and didn't go off on the CSR when I called to complain.

I also did my research and found Dell to have the best price but also knew Dell didn't have a good track record of delivering iPods in a timely fashion. I put in my order anyway knowing my new iPod was to be just a 'nice to have' instead of a 'need' so it didn't bother me to wait a few weeks. If the wait ever got unbearable I would've cancelled and bought from Amazon like dmarcus48 did. But I didn't mind the wait and that's the point I'm trying to make.

At the end of the day I saved $100 and am getting my new iPod a lot sooner than I expected and with a free 128mb SD card at that!

Again I say, life is good - for those who are patient.

# 49 Re: Dell Offering of June 26th
I think your experience with Dell varies a lot based on who your sales agent is. About a month ago they were running a deal that netted me 10%+$40 off my 15GB iPod. I called on the last night of the promotion and got an agent who was so nice that in addition to letting me buy an iPod that wasn't listed on Dell's website (they were really backlogged), he let me call in the next day to place my order (I had to go somewhere the night the sale ended).

My dad tried calling in that day to get his own iPod, got a different rep who told him they were out of stock, and that was that.

To my agent's credit the iPod arrived within 2 weeks, even though they were backlogged. So I've had a good experience with Dell and will continue to buy from them until I experience something like what you guys are going through. :(

As a side note, we've had 2 Dell comps, they've been very good (customer support was really good, esp. when our graphics card conked out twice) and I considered buying another before deciding to build my own.

FYI: Dell shipped out my iPod with an expected arrival date of July 16th, 7 business days later than they originally stated. I don't think that's TOO bad. I still don't defend Dell for not making great shipping date estimates, but I don't think they strung me along. After all, telling me it would ship August 19th, would've encouraged most people to cancel their order and get it elsewhere. Turns out I'll get it "just" 3 weeks after placing the order. If it's true they had orders for 8,000 of these, I wouldn't consider that too bad.

: I just contacted Dell and My Ipod Shipped out the 11th...

I got my UPS tracking already...

things that I have learned

**Email Notification doesn't work

**Dell customer service (Phone, Email, Forum and Chat) still sucks

Dell support with their computers is awesome. Too bad it's bad with iPods...

Aside from my iPod experiences with Dell, where I've keep my expectations low because I knew that they'd get a massive amount of orders, my support experiences have been great. Once, when I ordered a Sony Clie T665 and wanted to return it because the screen was really horrible, they accepted the return and even sent me an airbill for shipping!

So let me ask this question: those of you who posted that Dell sucked because they delayed your orders, now that you will soon have your iPods, does Dell suck less?

No... Dell completely SUCKS even more...

I am highly DISGUSTED with the way they do business and I am absolutely LIVID with the horrible lack of costumer service.

WHY?

#1. The CSRs seem to have NO idea whats going on with these orders.. I have made a string of calls within a day and I get a variety of conflicting information about the Order status.

***One CSR said they had no idea how many Ipods were on order and knew of NO ONE who would have information to that info. They next CSR told me around 7600.

#2. I ordered my Ipod on the Dell website... WHY SELL SOMETHING THAT ISN'T IN STOCK??
We already know that at times Dell pulls the Ipod page from their website so why do they allow SO many customers to order something that they know they can't fulfill in a timely manner.
**this was the THIRD TIME***

#3 I have been readina variety of feedback on bizrate.com, epinions.com, fatwallet.com, planetfeedback.com about customer satisfaction with Dell and lets face it.. Its once seemingly gleeming custumer service/tech support they had is all going to HELL...

#4 It is such a SHAME to think how LUCKY I am for getting a product almost a month after it was ordered!! WHAT HORRIBLE STANDARDS!!!

-- all in all.. I am a patient and understanding person, but lets face it.. Dell completely let me down with the constant run arounds and misinformations. I WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT SHOP AT DELL ANYMORE... I have a Dell PC and I love it.. I think its a great product but NEVER AGAIN!!!

F*** YOU DELL!!!!!!

Then don't get one...hehe...
I just got a new iMac; its very cool, but I left the Apple store $2800 poorer. Macs are not the kind of computer for just anyone.

just build your own. you can get the same specs at half the price. the only thing you don't get is a full warranty and an ugly case. :p

No, I got the latest model (17" 1GHz) and got it decked out (768 RAM, Superdrive, nice new printer, scanner, .Mac, Dazzle Hollywood DV-Bridge). I did get some accessories, but I don't see how anyone can walk out of that Apple store spending less than $1500 on an iMac. They guy said that this was the norm (the norm, that is, purchasing a computer listed at $1800 and spending $2800).

Nope, its a regular size printer. You are thinking of the Canon i70.

Has anyone who ordered a 15 GB on 06.26.03 - and who had their order delayed until 08.08.03 - received their iPod yet? Just wondering if there's a chance that mine will arrive early (Ha!).

Thanks
