Idea for 2.01 firmware on older iPods (needs 3G iPod owners help)
I got an idea for a method of tricking the iPod into thinking an older iPod is a third generation iPod, but I need the help of a third generation iPod owner. I installed the new firmware updater software to try and update the firmware on the second generation iPod to 2.01, and of course received the error that my firmware was incompatible within the iPod Manager software. I then manually editing the SysInfo file located in X:\iPod_Control\Device\ (I copied it to my hard drive, edited it, and copied it back actually) and changed the line "buildID: 0x01308000 (1.3)" to say "buildID: 0x01308000 (2.0)." After manually ending the iPod background tasks, I tried running the iPod Manager again. Sure enough, it reported that I had firmware 2.0 and needed to update to 2.01. Unfortunately, it still said I had hardware incompatibilities once I made it to the updater.
Could someone with a third generation iPod please PM me the text of their SysInfo file, or e-mail me with the file attached? You will need to enable hidden and system files to see the iPod_Control directory. You will probably need to copy the file from the iPod to your hard drive before it will open properly. My email address is (non-spam version):
c y b e r i n f e r n o 1(at)hotmail.com
without the spaces of course :-)
Thanks so much in advance!

Isnt this a bit risky? Whatif the iPod updater flashes the BIOS and make it unusable?

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately, the same hardware incompatibility error persists. I'll keep trying, though.

I have a Best Buy warranty that's a walk-in replacement plan. No questions asked, they will givie me a new one if I walk in with this one and the receipt.

I still don't see how the Gen1/2 will work with the G3 software - the buttons will need to be handled completely differently for a start and second the sound encoder/decoder is completely different.

Stefan, i agree... The chipset and fundemental hardware is different. Even if you make it install, I don't see anyway that you could then get it to work!

Interesting. I thought that there weren't many hardware differences between the generation other than button location. I didn't realize that there are encoding/decoding differences. I guess I'll just have to pray that Apple pays attention to the online petition :(

if you have a best buy warranty, simple make your ipod inoperable, and get a new one. since best buy doesnt' carry 1st or 2nd gens anymore, you'll get a 3rd gen...

Hmm...that's a good point. I'll think about it. The biggest advantage of the 2G ipod is battery life, though. My 2G gets about 12 hours on one full charge, and I've read that the 3G barely gets the 8 hours its rated for.

true. but think of it this way... if you mess up your 2nd gen while trying to update the firmware to 2.0.1, you'll have to exchange it for a 3rd gen. so basically you have to choose, if you want a 3rd gen, you can mess around trying to update your 2nd gen to 2.0.1 or you can just stick a magnet up to it. but if you want to the longer battery life of your 2nd gen, i wouldn't mess with it.

But at this point I've pretty much given up on flashing the new firmware to my iPod. The idea I had still didn't work, and my iPod wasn't screwed up because of it. I reformatted and it's fine. I'll have to think about exchanging it, though. I've got 'till December until my warranty expires.

i'd exchange it for a 3rd gen right at the end of your warranty. this way, you'll be under warranty with best buy for the longest time possible. also by getting a 3rd gen, i believe you'll get a new 1 year warranty thru apple??

That's probably a good idea. I don't think I'll get a one year new warranty with apple, though. They probably won't give me any sort of receipt for my new product, so I won't have a proof of purchase. Also, I know when you excercize your warranty with computer parts, your warranty is not extended. It simply continues. It would be neat if it did carry a new warranty, though. I had better check up to make sure that my warranty will still work, as some companies only offer warranties for the life of the product.

i'm pretty sure best buy will give you a new receipt. and because you got a new ipod (not from apple) your warranty with apple should renew.
# 15 Re: Idea for 2.01 firmware on older iPods (needs 3G iPod owners help)
I think that's pretty immoral to be fraudulent with your warranties. iPodlounge has a policy of not discussing deliberate damage toward your iPod for warranty purposes; and even though you aren't discussing 'deliberate' damage, I would think it falls in the same category.

I hope you're right. Now I just have to find the stupid Best Buy receipt. And I'll probably follow your recommendation of waiting until my warranty is almost over, which would be in December.
