why do I have duplicates of some artists
why do I have duplicates of some artists when they are both spelled the same and seem to be the same to me? why aren't the songs just being grouped together under one of the artists' name?

You probably have something very minor different. I know some of my album names are spelled incorrectly so I have like three different versions of Aenima on my iPod because I'm too #### lazy to tag them right now. Even capital letters make a difference.
HAHAHA, oh yeah, I just remembered. MMJB puts random spaces behind some tags because it is a ####ty program that should never have been made (whoa, sorry there, small rant). Anyway, get ID3 TagIT and then select all of one artist and click on mulitple edit and type in the artist name, that should get them all identical.
Hope that helps.

is ID3 TagIt freeware?

Yes.

This problem came up for me recently. It is not a tagging/typo issue, it seems to be an ipod issue. When I did heavy browsing for a long period of time, randomly the ipod will double, and in my case, triple an artist's name in the list. No matter which of the 3 I click on, it takes me to the same songs and albums.

yeah i have some that are song duplicates, but I am able to delete those.
I have artist duplicates that have different songs when I go to one of the various artist duplicates. For some reason they won't all group together under one of the artists' names.

Album names starting with numerals (such as "7", "69 Love Songs") may cause the iPod to give duplicate entries, for some reason. Renaming them to something that starts with letters ("Seven", "Sixty-Nine Love Songs") will fix it, or did for me anyway.
I'm not sure if this also applies to artists starting with numerals, or songs etc.

my duplicate artists don't have any albums or songs that start with numbers. It doesn't really bother me though as long as it's only 1 or 2 artists, especially since i can access all of their albums no matter which duplicate I go to. Now if all of my artists were tripled, that would be a major problem. LOL.

breakdown,
Check to see if you have extra spaces before or after your tag info. The presence of a space will cause the iPod to see two different albums/artists.
# 9 Re: why do I have duplicates of some artists
nope, not the case here. As I said, it's not a typo issue. I have my artist lists very, very tightly organized and tagged, and I even checked the duplicated artists for spaces and there were none.
The list is fine with no duplicates at first, but then when i use my ipod for a while slowly artists will triple by themselves, and like I said, all duplicates lead to the same songs and albums, so it's not a case of some songs having a space and others not.

Sounds like your database is corrupted. Have you tried restoring the iPod? This erases all the music off the iPod, so if you do it, be sure you've got the songs elsewhere.
