What one thing would you change about iPod?

If you were Steve for a day, and could demand a single change for the iPod, what would it be?

I'd vote for battery life also.

So you guys are saying you'd trade the size of the iPod back to the larger style for extra battery life? I like my iPod the size it is, thank you very much.

Making the Windows iPod equal in every way to the Mac one, with a fully functional version of iTunes, playcounts, clock synchronisation, etc.

I think Apple is working on this right now, so that's really not changing anything... ;)

If you didn't want anyone to counter your opinions, why did you ask us? :D

Personally, I'd be very shocked if iTunes for Windows is nothing more than a vehicle for the Music Store, and a mere shadow of the product Mac users know and love - a bit like Quicktime for Windows is, in fact. Which is why I posted what I did. Also, all we know is that Apple are searching for a coder for iTunes for Windows. Have they announced playcounts etc as a new firmware update? If they haven't, then there's my wish. And if they have, I've obviously missed something, and apologise accordingly.

You can counter all you wish, that's what this thread is for... I, too, would love a longer lasting battery, but not at the expense of a larger iPod.

As far as iTunes goes, you right... all we know is Apple is hiring Windows developers... I hope it pans out that the Windows iTunes is everything the Mac is.

Um... do you mean that you'd be shocked if it was more, and that you expect it to be just a portal for the music store? Your post doesn't really make sense as written.

Apple won't say what may be included in future firmware updates - they just announce it when the firmware is released.

No one said anything about changing it back to the old size:)

Seeing how this is 'fantasy', I'd like a higher capacity battery to be put in the already small iPod unit.

I was answering his question (please see his previous post, which I included in my response), and clearly wasn't making any kind of judgement. I'm not sure why you would have gotten that from my post, unless you didn't read all of it.

BTW, there is a whole "Wishlist" forum on these boards for these kinds of posts. Can a moderator move this?

Ofcourse - better battery life would be great!

But also make it scratch resistant, with better earbuds that retract. Plus a built-in FM Transmitter.

I'd rather they kept it simple, as it is. That's why I like it so much to begin with.

As for my wish, I agree with the battery and iTunes for Windows. Oh, and Pacman would be a cool game for the iPod. I occasionally get addicted to Pacman for a couple months and that would keep me out of my room and off my desktop when that happens :D

# 20 Re: What one thing would you change about iPod?
The one thing I would change about the iPod is have it made by an organization that knows more about service than Apple does.

Maybe the TiVo folks?

Apple don't know Winders and they don't know customer service.

# 21 Re: What one thing would you change about iPod?
Same as earlier posts. Love my iPod, but I would like it much more if I had AAC and access to 99? tunes NOW. I can't believe they're going to convert any Win users to Mac by withholding features to us Win folks, but they must have their reasons. If someone else makes a similar, legal music service available to Win users before Apple does, I will be all over it. Wonder if Apple will miss their chance to capture Win users, but they know what they're doing, probably not?

Thin. Super thin. Casio Exilim thin. Brushed titanium, solid state, 100gb, color screen (for album cover thumbnails), replaceable battery, and Bluetooth headphones. Oh, and no clicks between tracks. That's not asking too much is it?

Maybe... but Im really wondering how many people would be happy buying a song encoded at a mere 128kbps (albeit it's AAC).

If Im going to buy a song for a buck, I'd want it as close to CD quality as possible (320kbps at least).

I am a photographer, and a watch collector, but those watches/photos are not mine, they're my friend's, who gives me web space.

This is my stuff...

The AAC @ 128 kbit is, imho close enough to quality to warrant a purchase, I think it is really not that much different than 320kbit mp3's. I purchased a bit of music already and then I went back and transcoded all of the 320kbit mp3's on my ipod to AAC 128 (there's not really much of a sound loss doing that, try a couple if you don't believe me) Now my battery lasts longer and my (portable) collection of music went from having 3100 songs @ 17GB with no artwork stored down to 11GB (including album artwork for EVERY album)

Sorry this post is getting long...got carried away

Although I do agree that you'll save space and have longer battery life, I completely disagree about your statement that 128kbps AAC is even close to 320kbps MP3.
There's been a big debate in the older forums, and from what I've read 128kbps AAC is closer to 160kbps MP3 LAME.

In anycase, I guess Im just a bit picky, and not everyone is an audiophile.

# 29 Re: What one thing would you change about iPod?
I'll admit that there is somewhat of a difference, but it also depends on your usage. I, by no means threw out all my 13,000 320kbit mp3's (their backed up on 15 DVD-R's, but you aren't going to notice the difference in, let's say for instance, in a car. with all the road noise and stuff it's hard to notice. I listened to at least 30 or 40 tracks side by side using a pair of Sony studio monitors on both my ipod and my 17" powerbook and was hard pressed to tell much difference. i also tried using my sennheiser DX200's on both and, again, it was a negligble difference. I consider myself to be more picky than most, but most of my music listening takes place in the car, through a pretty nice set of 5.1 PC speakers with an Extigy card, or my sennheiser's. Perhaps if hooked it up to a more defining, higher quality sound system, the differences would be more noticable.

Exactly my point. For me, if I were to buy a song, it wouldnt be just for my precious iPod. I'd also like the option of burning a bunch of songs onto a CD and playing on my system.

I guess arguing about this is kind of moot. What I want to know, is why Apple chose the 128bit rate (as opposed to a higher one)?

Seems obvious, but I would fix the bugs we've been experiencing. The only bug I have actually experienced (besides my backlight not working and having to send it into Apple) is how the iPod skips tracks 30 seconds into them which is a huge problem!

I had the same problems with tracks skipping ahead in my Creative Nomad 3 Jukebox. I returned it under the extended waranty and demanded an iPod. Now I see that this can potential be a problem with an iPod?!
It must be an MP3 thing.
Ahh well. At least I don't have to lug around that ^&%$^ Nomad.
Now onto the topic...

A change? uh Better software for windows. (Musicmatch is just to0 clunky and slow)

How about a limited addition iPod that comes with an artist of choice, like.. I dunno.. Britney Spears.. (Yes, the actual person, like a personal slave).. Also I'd be rubber and elastic.. so you can bend it and stuff.. that'd be cool, of course i'd have touch buttons and stuff tho, oh and some sort of uber battery that will give you 9 years of playback @ a 1 hour charge. Also i'd have 1 terabyte of storage.. And the earbuds would be so small u can't see them, and they're super sticky so you would place them in your ear and they'd stick there forever, and they'd be wireless obviously, so you could just carry your wireless iPod around and play a song and you'd just hear it without having to put earbuds in your ears or anything, since they're allready there. Also ofcourse i'd have a full color screen and it'll let you play movies (pr0n) and stuff, all formats would be supported ofcourse. And a built in universal receiver thing that lets you transmit music to any hi fi etc etc equipment and video stuff to any tv!! :D

If I just described the iPod gen4 I'll kill myself..

l'd like to see the Ipod as an external drive in Windows Explorer, that I can both drag and drop mp3's onto, and off of, without the need of some third party software. And...a "Fellows type" protection screen on the UI (standard).

# 36 Re: What one thing would you change about iPod?
Oo I tottaly forgot, it should have this awsome new technology I call 'Suckage v1.0', it will allow you to just hold the iPod above a cd, mini cd, dvd etc and when you select the Suck! option in the main menu it will suck the songs right off of the cd on the fly, in under a second! It'll automaticallyu be tagged right etc! (And obviously it wouldn't REALLY suck the songs off, it'll just make 900kbs mp3 copies, or in the case of video's it'll make perfect quality DivX files..)

(Suckage will also allow you to suck stuff off of other iPods and onto your own, it'll be deleted on the 'host' tho so that it won't be used for illegal copies..)

# 37 Re: What one thing would you change about iPod?
Well battery for me is no problem (my 2nd gen 20gig winpod has a battery that seemingly lasts 12+ straight hours with still 1 line left solid, and it should be more with the 1.3 upgrade i just added ps, conact me if u want the winpod 1.3 upgrade).

My only wish is to allow a way to upload my own programs to do things, like program my own addon of some sort. The things this could do would be meraculous.

As for AAC, its not signifigantly better than mp3, and is signifigantly worse than orgg vorbis (which i would love to see suport for). I would personally perfer just to back up my current cds in mp3.

Case wise, the shiny aluminum is kinda lame, i would rather something brushed.

scubafly's idea for a drag and drop upload would be great. This could be easily accomplished. All it would have to do is rebuild the database from scratch every time you unplugged/reset it (which ephpod has the option to do). Could be done very sexily and seemlessly. This is a great recommendation!

And as crazy as it sounds(I'm a crazy person), I wouldn'd mind it being completely waterproof incase you wanted to use it in the shower or while swimming laps or even while showering. Take it out in the rain without fear or use it in the shower. Did I mention using it in the shower?

Battery life is fine for me ( mostly used in dock or car charger anywars) I dont see the point in a radio, I mean you do have at least 5gb of music, but npr would be cool on it.

I want:
voice control
wireless headphones
a better remote, like a baby scroll wheel on it. or wireless remote included
album art which would require a color screen. (not to important though)
