bass distortion since 2.0.1 anyone?
Got my iPod last week. Really pleased with it and didn't notice anything strange until after I had updated to 2.0.1. Since then there is so much distortion on the bass, but oddly enough not on all tracks. It seems to affect 1 genre more than another. I've ripped the same songs at 4 different bit rates and its the same....
I've looked for version 2.0.0 so I can install the older firmware but can't find it on the web anywhere.
Does anyone know if this is a firmware isue or am I missing something here? It's not the phones - it does it with my senheisers and also when connected to my hi-fi.
Thanks.

... yea a few of us have had similar problems, though the jury's still out on whether it's an update problem or head-phone based ...
check this link (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3144)
... peterodda concluded that it was his headphones and just coincidental with the update ... i've still not resolved my problem, but that's more out of lack of time/effort ... please post anything you find as a cause ... i'll have a go at sorting mine out at first opportunity.

Hmmm I've had the same problem with the unit. tried 2 sets of earphones (70$ CDN Sony EX-70's and 450$ Etymotics ER-4P's) and both seem to output the same distorted bass on certain freq's. Im running the 2.0.1 firmware and working on a winxp box.
One song you can really hear it on is 'Fair' by Ben Folds Five. Its really kinda depressing spending a small fortune a unit and it having a huge flaw :/ . Seems all bassy EQ settings do the same thing... would love it if there was a manual setting :)
if anyone has a clue what the real cause of this is, would love to know...
thanks.

I originally thought it was the headphones with the ipod but I recently bought the Shure e3c earbuds and some songs sound amazing but the same songs that distoted the bass with the original ipod phones also distort with the new shures. It's not the phones because Ive tried them with other devices and the shures are awesome. So APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS ISSUE!

I have same problem. Songs sound fine on Mac, transfer to ipod and the same song has bass distortion... To double check I plugged in my ipod head phones to my mac to listen to the song, sounded fine... plugged into ipod-- distortion, limp biscuit just breaks up on drunbeats and heavy riffs. It is really driving me nuts!!

I'm having the same issue. Tried multiple headphones and speakers, and still have specific songs break up on loud frequencies. Plays just fine on the computer direct through iTunes. Seems to be an iPod problem.

lovely new iPod birthday present, now three weeks later right headphone is distorting horribly - yes it's mostly the bass & on songs that have been okay up to now. i havent been blasting them so what's going on. Daughter's iPod shuffle headphones also dodgy after 6 months or so. Poor quality or what?

Same problem here... only with bass boost EQ on. Dynamic EQ's (EQ that works from the amp level) tend to do that, from personal experience. Apple should make EQ work from the signal level instead, before it feeds into the amp. This works very cleanly.
Another very strange thing is that when I use powerful headphones on the iPod, I get NO BASS even with bass booster on. But when I connect to my Logitech surround speakers, there's TOO MUCH bass even with EQ off. What could possibly be the cause of that?
