WOW My Battery life is amazing!

I own a 3rd gen 30gig ipod which I have had for about a week now. From reading the forums it seems as though many people are a little unsatisfied with the new ipod's battery. On the other hand, I have tested the battery life of my new ipod and could not believe the results. After a 13 hour drive in the car playing, pausing, skipping tracks, adjusting EQ, volume and everything else you can think of, I had only lost 2 bars out of 4. Keep in mind that I never shut the ipod off. It was playing continuously. Is my ipod special or did the new firmware from apple do the trick? Please let me know what you think.

during your trip did you have the ipod hooked upto your car via the power adapter by any chance?

that would explain a few things.

No people! These are anything but lies. Why would I lie about something like that. If it clears up anything, at about 15 hours the last 2 bars dropped instantly. You heard me right, 15 hours of battery life! NO JOKE. I wish there was a way to prove it to you. That was a trip from California to Washington.

How many songs did you have one it?

I assume with 1-2 songs the song would stay in the cache and the HD would never spin. So it might be possible for 10 hours... but not 15. :p

You sure the radio wasnt on? :D

There is a way you can prove it to us. Get a webcam, download windows media encoder, fire them both up, put ur ipod next to a digital clock, press play on ur ipod and just leave the webcam recording it and the time. There. Thats a way.

# 24 Re: WOW My Battery life is amazing!
I ran my iPod today for 8.5 hours at work then for another 2 on the way home...and it still had some juice left. I load a 200 song playlist and rarely skip tracks, or bother the iPod at all...I don't use an EQ and I keep my backlight set to "always on" and turn it off and on manually, using the menu button.

I dont know whats the big deal here but it is very easy for a new ipod to last 15+ hours. When I first got mine, me and my brother in law, it lasted on average for about 12 hours+ So I can believe what he is saying. Those who don't need to do some research on the battery,

Which generation of iPod do you have? It's unheard of for a new third generation iPod to last even close to that long.

# 27 Re: WOW My Battery life is amazing!
I am running the newest model of the ipod (the third generation as most say). Its a 15gb and I have about 40 songs on it so far. On a full charge, lately it lasts about 10 hours. But like I said, when I first got got it, the ipod would play 12-13 hours no problem.

Thats not strange at all, when the old iPods were about they had the same problem but worse. What it is the prediction of battery life drops when the HDD spins up, when it stops spinning the prediction goes back up again. I wouldn't worry about that.

My iPod never lasts beyond 6/7 hours max. Ever.

I'm a me-too on good battery life, with a 30 GB and firmware 2.0.1. I drove to a jobsite yesterday morning, while plugged into the Belkin charger. When I got there, I unplugged the iPod, put the hold switch on, and put it in my trunk. However, I'd forgotten to hit the Pause button.

Nine hours later, I go to plug it in again, and see that it has been playing all day. And I still showed 4 bars on the battery! Call me a liar, I don't care, I know that it happened.

Possibly significant item: the playlist that I had selected only had AAC files in it. Hmm.
thenightfly42 at 2007-11-15 14:45:20 >
# 30 Re: WOW My Battery life is amazing!
If the playlist you selected didn't require the hard drive to spin up because all of the songs were in the cache it would make more sense than if it's having to spin up every 20 minutes.
wickerbill at 2007-11-15 14:46:20 >
# 31 Re: WOW My Battery life is amazing!
I have never let mine run all the way down, but my battery life sucks.

After about 3 hours I am down to one bar. I have 2000 songs and just use random play, no backlight. I have to recharge mine every night.

It's a 30GB 3rd generation.

If I am supposed to get 7 or 8 hours out of it, then that last bar better have a lot of endurance.

If that was in response to me, no. The indicator said something like "147 out of 453", and I had started the playlist fresh that morning.

Also, the headphones weren't attached, although the volume setting was up high (for attaching to my computer speakers at work).

I went to stay with my cousin for 2 days and took my charger. The battery on my ipod went dead at 7 hours after a full 4 hours of charging. I left it on the dock all night and got up in the morning and started playing it again. At 3 hours a bar dropped. So figure it might have lasted 12 hours on continous play. Kinda strange how it went from 7 hours then to (figure 12 hours)...

now you're saying 12 hours total... ok?

I just traveled around the world in 80 days in my balloon with my 30gb iPod on constantly. I only have 72,000 songs on it, so I had some repeats during the flight, but the iPod never stopped. After that, I landed at the North Pole to pick up my SUV which would not start (120 below zero outside). Luckily I had enough power left in the iPod to jump start the SUV.

Actually I was flying to Tokyo on a 777 and the battery went dead after 7 hours. From there I went to sleep and had the dream from above.

If he's married, his wife probably kept dutifully plugging the car charger back in anytime he wasn't looking to keep the tunes playing so he wouldn't keep talking through a perfectly good drive. ;)

you think 15+ hours from a new 3rd gen is good!! a week ago i made an internal battery for my ipod. i started with a simplified version of My Fusion and a little bit of plutonium and voila!!! now my ipod runs for weeks constantly without ever going to sleep with backlight on,even out in the sunlight! Eq and everything else on..now thats a heck of a battery life, wouldnt you say! LOL

jasonmccabe: My post wasn't even funny the first time aroudn so I'm not going to try explaining it.

As to the general topic of this thread -- I don't even know what my true battery life is. Some days I feel like I've listened to my iPod for 75% of my 10 hour workday, but I have yet to do a battery drain test or really pay attention to how long it's playing. I dock it every night to charge up and I have yet to get a battery warning or failure to turn on due to low battery.

However, my first G3 iPod only lasted about 8 total (non-consecutive) hours before dying on me... so after being without an iPod for about a month I've just been enjoying having it, and not worrying about battery life since it hasn't seemed to impact my usage.

Has anyone ever actually gotten a definative answer to the question of whether listening to your IPOD while it's connected to power puts a wear on the battery (for argument's sake let's assume you start playing the ipod after it is fully charged).

if the HD spins up, battery life goes down. I think. So random play kills the battery because it spins up EVERY SONG...but i have yet to get one so I really can't back this up...
DJ Hyp3rion at 2007-11-15 15:01:28 >
# 46 Re: WOW My Battery life is amazing!
I think you are mistaken. The random playlist is generated once at the beginning.

so i'm guessing the ipod chooses the songs randomly ahead of time and just stores it in it's 32mb ram?

The listing of it, yeah. Then it loads up songs to fill the 32 MB buffer. Once that's been played through, another 32 MBs is loaded into the buffer, etc.

Where did you get 26 hours? Nowhere did I say I was expecting 26 hours.

In your original post you stated you achieved 13 hours and 2 bars were still remaining. The iPOD has 4 bars.

13/2 = 6.5 ... roughly 6.5 hrs per bar according to your claim.

6.5 * 4 = 26

The math according to your posted findings would indicate 26 hours of battery life after 4 bars.

Understand MY findings?
