UPDATE (2.0.1): Hold switch and battery life

Well I was having the problem (not consistently, unfortunately), where if I turned of my 15gb iPod and put the hold switch on, the battery would be drained in the morning.

Since updating the OS to 2.0.1, I haven't had any batery drains when I have my iPod off with the hold switch ON.

I know it's only been like 2-3 days now but so far so good. Wondering if anyone with the new update 2.0.1 has had that problem. I'm really hoping it was fixed with this update.

In fact, one thing I noticed that seems to be new in the 2.0.1 update is that when my iPod is off and I turn the hold switch ON, i hear a click in my headphones. It sounds like the sound is switched off or something. I never heard this before the update but I hope that it's like an extra level of OFF or something so that the battery isn't drained while the HOLD is on.

nope it did that before the update. at least mine did. and still does. not bothered though, the clicks between tracks has gone so i'm well happy.

however, i'm getting crackling noise on it now (first time i've used it this morning since the update) that certainly wasn't there before. only happens in the left earpiece and seems to be caused by bass. i'll test it later when i get home - could be just a reset/restore is required or something, or maybe a problem with the earphones...

peterodda, i have noticed the same problem after the update. It just on the left channel. I did a reset and that didn't work. I doubt its the earphone cause I didn't see the problem before the update, just the clicks between tracks.

I'm having the same problems with crackling on the left channel earphone, sounds like its caused by the bass.

i thought i had blown the earphone out, buy maybe not? any ideas...

Yep. I've had this problem, too, sine the update, and only with tracks with heavy bass.

I Thought it maybe something to do with an incomplete upload to the iPod because during the uploading it froze 75% thro' the progress bar and hung for 5 mins. I unmounted despite the warning screen ('do not disconnect' on the iPod) and the iPod had v2.01 on. I've tried to subsequently upload again but whenever I try to run the updater exe programme from my computer it only allows the Restore command (losing all data, etc.) and not the update alone.

This may be completely coincidental but it'll be interetsting to work out if this crackling/distortion problem with bassy tracks is specific to a certain set up. I'm using a windows formatted iPOd, updated on an IBM A21p lap-top, running Windows2000, with updating taking place through a Firewire port on a USB2+Firewire Cardbus DV Kit (SIIG).

how bizarre ... my old (ones borrowed from my old discman) earphones work fine with my ipod yet my apple supplied earphones have this crackling problem. i've not tried it with any decent earphones cos i haven't got any. however, plugged into the dock and then through an amp there's no problem. the update to v2.0.1 went fine (unlike dcbell), plus i've done a full restore and this problem doesn't want to go away. guess i'll have to acquire some new (good) headphones to see whether the problem is in fact the ipod itself.

ok, definitive test: once i get home, in about 9 hours :(, i'll plug my amp into the headphone socket rather than the dock line out. if i get any crackling thru that, this thing's going back!

i'll let you know...

Nice one. Let us know how it goes. In the mean time, when i get time, i'll mess around with different earphones and/or dock outputs and see if i can narrow the problem. Though wouldn't hold your breath isnce i'm working my kn*ckers off at the moment.

it's definitely the apple headphones, as I use my Sony walkman headphones at the gym and i have the Pod cranked to full volume with no sound artifacts or crackling. im going to toss them out and go buy a new pair, maybe those noise-cancelling ones.

i love the pod, sucks about how bad the earphones are.

My problem might be more personal then, cos I'm not using the Apple buds; I'm using Sony MDR-EX71s and they're only 2-3 weeks old.

ok i did the test... tested it on two separate earphones and my amp ... guess what, no crackling. must be the earphones, at least for me. just a coincidence it started happening directly after the update.

dcbell, i'd try some other earphones before you blame your ipod - my apple earphones are only a few weeks old also.

peterodda: thanks for the help .

... out of interest do you consider yourself having bad hearing? ... very subjective without getting some ear Dr. doing tests, but from my view point I'd say i've got bad ears ... the reason I ask is cos i wonder if somehow we've blown the buds on the earphones? ... somehow i doubt it since i've only ever had the volume bar at about 3/4 of the total, though most people seem fine with volume levels at about 1/2 the bar ... just seems odd to have both blown earphones with new sets ...

nope i wouldn't - i tend to have it at full volume only if there's a lot of background noise. anyway, the earphones should handle way more than our eardrums. your make of earphones in particular are supposed to be v good. sometimes you just get a faulty batch i suppose.

by the way, i dug out my minidisc player and the earphones crackle with that as well... dunno why i didn't just do that in the first place!

# 12 Re: UPDATE (2.0.1): Hold switch and battery life
I've had this crackling problem since the start, i.e. 2.0.0, if I have the equaliser switched on I get massive crackling - makes it pointless. Updating to 2.0.1 hasn't changed anything...
And it isn't my headphones - I've tested them on my stereo with the same track.

my crackling problem was definitely the earphones - i've got some of them sony ex71s now and they're the business. i'm also using the eq. sounds like you've got a more serious technical problem and should get a replacement.

dcbell: i'm starting to think i have a hearing problem now, i have to pump the thing up to full to get what i need out of it - i'm using the volume capped version though so i suppose that's why.

... yea probably the EU capping business to blame ... haven't sorted my crackling/distortion out yet ... still haven't had a good hour or so to track down a number of distorted tracks and try them on different set ups ... will sort it out soon & post, semi-promise ...

# 15 Re: UPDATE (2.0.1): Hold switch and battery life
I posted a topic mentioning the song 'Texas to Ohio' by Damien Jurado- don't know if anyone knows it- the crackle is really bad in that one- pretty sure it's not the encoding.

I have to get some good headphones and see what happens- anyone suggest any that cleared the crackle?
