Hard Drive Space smaller than iPod
I apologize ahead of time for what might be a stupid question. I haven't bought an iPod yet. I have some concern that since my hard drive doesn't have 15 or 30 gigs of space left that I won't be able to first rip my music and then transfer them to the iPod.
So, can someone explain how you get up to 30 gigs of music to an iPod if you don't have 30 gigs of hard drive space for mp3/acc files without having to purchase an external hard drive?
Thanks... pixelMan

You'll have to choose to manually manage your music collection (in the Preferences). In other words, your iPod won't actually be synching with your computer. Just rip 5 or 10 Mb of songs to your computer, manually transfer them to the iPod, then delete them from your machine. Then start on the next batch.

Thanks Butch. But how does your process work with playlists? In other words, how can I create playlists of songs with a large library without having the files on my hard drive? Am I wrong in assuming that 30gig owners have at least that amount of hard drive space available so that they can create and manage their playlists?
Thanks...pixelMan

You just rip a few at a time, or rip them directly to the iPod...

You can create playlists just on the iPod. Then just drags songs from the iPod to the playlist. I very rarely listen to music from iTunes, so all the playlists I create reside only on the iPod.

Ah, I see. I had thought that the play lists were constructed in iTunes. Thanks again, all, for your help. I can almost feel that iPod in my hands.

pixelMan,
The playlists still need to be constructed in iTunes (or whatever program you're using). My point is, the playlist can reside in the iTunes list or the iPod list. If you're going to be using something besides iTunes, I can't for sure say if it will work the same way as iTunes.
