Which iPod to Buy: 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Generation?

I'd like to buy an iPod - but I'm not sure which generation to get. Do I get a used 5GB model? A used 20 GB model with touch sensitive buttons? Or the new, lastest model with a dock? What different features do each have - software or otherwise?
Thanks for your help!

Not sure where you'd get a used gen 3 ipod. Personally I would get the 20gb gen 2 iPods that Apple is selling through their website.

Get the 3rd generation.

Yeah, I want 4 hours less battery life!

I'm not seeing 4 hours less battery life on my 3rd gen. I consistently get 8 but I don't mess w/the buttons much so that's a factor.

Definitely go for that size though. 15 3rd gen should be the smallest you look at IMO.

If you want more, then go for the 20. You'll end up using what you have...

I have a 10 and a 15, love the small size of the new ones, but I still like my old "brick" as well. ;)

The reason Apple made touch sensitive buttons (other than they're cool), is because the other ones broke... so that narrows it down to the 2nd and 3rd generations... There are people that dislike Apple because they are not making any more firmware updates to the old iPod... Therefore, I would recommend a new 3rd generation... Try getting one off e-bay so that you don't pay the full price...

There are actually quite a few things to think about when deciding. You'll just need to prioritize depending what's most important to you.

1) Battery life: The 1st and 2nd gen iPods will easily get 9 to 12 hours per charge. Most people with 3rd gen iPods are reporting between 6 and 8 hours.

2) Software updates and features: The 3rd gen iPods have the best software features and, since they're the latest from Apple, will probably get the most attention when it comes to software updates. It remains to be seen if Apple will provide software updates to add some of the newer features, such as On-The-Go Playlists, to the 1st and 2nd Gen iPods.

3) Size: If you're after the smallest form factor, then there's no choice: go with the 3rd gen. Having said that, the 1st and 2nd gen iPods are by no means large or heavy.

4) Dock: There is no docking solution for the 1st and 2nd gen models. The dock provides some convenience as well as a line level audio out. If you want the dock, then get a 3rd gen (remember, it only comes standard with the 15 and 30Gb models. Buy a 10Gb and you'll need to buy the dock separate).

I'm sure I've missed a few things, but I think these are the most important. I don't think you can go wrong no matter what you buy. If you do buy a 3rd gen, I'd probably stay away from eBay and make sure you buy it from an Authorized Apple Reseller. It's not worth the hassle of saving a few bucks if you then have problems and need warranty work done.

Get the 2nd generation iPod if you want longer battery life AND won't get upset at whatever features will be added to the new ipods AND if you won't get upset that the old ipod may never receive a firmware update.
