anyone really see any backlight improvement with 2.0.1
I thought this update would allow the light to stay on (when manually turned on) as longs as the controls are being used, but no such luck. So anyone see any real improvement? Some have claimed better contrast/clarity, but I can't tell the difference on mine. I know this has been discussed somewhat in "Firmware 2.0.1 is out" thread, but I was hoping to get additional input from those who actually have some kind of backlight improvement. Thanks.

I havent seen an improvement either. I thought i screwed up the update when I didnt notice any changes. Maybe this effects certain models of the 3rd generation iPods and not all?

I am thinking that the improvement in contrast and clarity for some ppl are more of a placebo effect than actual improvements. But I may be wrong.

i have a question. I've seen pictures of iPods with a blue-ish backlight, mines like white. I know there isnt a way to change this through the settings or anything, but wat determines the backlight color? anyone know?

Just set the backlight to OFF in the settings then you can turn it on and off manualy by holding menu and it will stay on or off.

My 15GB backlight is blue, not white. it is more blue than white, my friend noticed as he has a GEN 2 10GB with white backlight.

trix,
I think the backlight is determined by the LED used for the lighting. Mine is somewhere between white and blue, mostly dependent on the ambient light. There have been long discussions about the screen color, but in the end if u are happy with your ipod, don't think about it.
Fundex,
I know you can turn it on and off manually, but when I turn it on manually, I want the backlight to stay on as long as I am browsing, which it doesn't. It's on a timer so it shuts off in about 17 seconds. Try it for yourself.

Thx doboy, i am really happy to have my iPod, but i was just curious about the backlight.
I have my backlight switched to 'Always On' and when i dont want the backlight i just switch it off by holding the menu button.

I do exactly the opposite to save battery and since I use my ipod mostly during the day, I have no need for lights.

does it waste that much battery power? I use my iPod a lot, and the battery hasnt died out on me just yet. But if it wastes a lot of battery power, i might as well turn it off. and do wat u do.

my iPod backlight is very blue... I would say it is almost as blue as the iPod on the package... There was a hint of white before the update... Maybe it changed something that makes the lcd work differently... Also, while playing solitaire, the screen doesn't get lighter anymore...
yeah, the backlight uses a considerable amount of battery power... Especially for the buttons, and the screen... (previous only had screen)... I only put mine on at night, or while playing a game...
# 12 Re: anyone really see any backlight improvement with 2.0.1
I haven't seen any noticeable change. It was slightly blue before the update, and its still the same.
# 13 Re: anyone really see any backlight improvement with 2.0.1
still very white
i like white though, blue is a bit naff.

I've had no change with the backlight or screen. Whilst i'm playing solitaire the screen looses its contrast still... Possibly not as badly, but it's still annoying.
The backlight settings still have all the same effects..
The only thing they could have done is extend a time (which they havnt) or change the fade times - which they havnt.

The battery light colour is more or less the same on all iPods, however under certain conditions it looks alot more blue. For instance, my 15GB iPod looks pretty much white in my room. But under the flouresecent lights in my school, it looks very blue.

oh ok. thx for all the info. i was just curious cause i was seeing two different backlight colors.
i havent played solitare that much, so i never realized there was a problem with the backlight. I played parachute and brick and i never realized anything. hmm

I always wondered about this blue vs. white backlight issue but I can tell you now that there really is a difference between iPods.
I had a white background one. I read posts about the blue but didn't really care. Well, my iPod harddrive died and Apple sent me a replacement and the backlight is very blue on the replacement, definitely not an issue of ambient lighting or whatever. It actually looks like the picture on the box. The screen display is also noticably crisper.
That said, it's not a huge difference. The color is a matter of aesthetics and I never had an issue with the crispness of display on the white one. But I am disappointed with Apple for having released different versions of a product without telling us in semi-deceptive packaging.
# 18 Re: anyone really see any backlight improvement with 2.0.1
thats how i started thinking about the backlight. when i was opening the 'cube' it had the picture of the iPod on the side with the blue backlight, and when i turned mine on it was white. This doesnt really bother me, but it was weird, i thought there was something wrong with my iPod :D. hehe.

# 19 Re: anyone really see any backlight improvement with 2.0.1
My 30GB iPod had a blue-ish tinge to the backlight but since updating to 2.0.1, it's very white. Kinda strange how everyone has different shades to their backlight. Not a huge issue, I suppose, but I kinda liked the blue.
# 20 Re: anyone really see any backlight improvement with 2.0.1
this is strange. maybe someone should ask Apple about it. hehe

What is your setup (platform, ipod version, etc.)? I have my backlight set to off and the backlight does not stay on when I hold down menu. It turns off after 20 seconds. However, if I set it to "Always On", then holding down menu will toggle it between Always Off and Always On. It's debatable whether this is a good thing as it requires two "long" commands to accomplish what you want.
# 22 Re: anyone really see any backlight improvement with 2.0.1
tonicboy. I have my iPod set on 'Always On'. The reason for this, is that my room doesnt have a lot of light, and when i use my iPod its usually not during teh day time. i think its more logical to just leave it on 'always on' and just turn it off when u dont want it by holding the menu button.

Yeah, I can see a case for leaving it on ALWAYS ON, but I think for most people, using the backlight is the exception rather than the rule. And when you do want to use the backlight, the ideal behavior would be to turn on the backlight and have it remain on as long as you're using it, then have it automatically turn itself off again to conserve power.
Maybe if we all say this enough times, someone from Apple will read this post and include that in the next firmware release :).

I see where ur coming from, and i agree ur right. I think they'll fix that sooner or later in one of their updates...

If I remember correctly, I think the 2nd gen ipods would stay on until done browsing when backlight was turned on manually. But I may be wrong since I only had the gen2 unit for 2 weeks about a yr ago.

Sure, but that's the same behavior in the new 3rd gen iPods. But turning on manually meant that you had to go into the menus and set Backlight > 2/5/10 Seconds.

I think u can turn on the light manually on gen2 ipods by holding onto the menu button, like in the gen3 ipods.

No, you can only turn the backlight on through the menu (and of course automatically if it's set to 2/5/10 Seconds).
# 29 Re: anyone really see any backlight improvement with 2.0.1
Yes you can.
