My views on my 30Gb-volume, clicks etc.

Well after getting the iPod out the box & loading it up my first impressions were not good to say the least - I thought the sound quality over my previous 20Gb was not as good, then there were these 'clicks' in between tracks & worst of all where was the volume? So I packed it up & was intending to return it but it bugged the hell out of me that I'd paid all this money for this beautiful object & here I was returning it after a couple of days! I got it back out the box & there it sat on my desk whilst I read all the threads here about all the problems etc hoping to find some answers!

I've downloaded the latest firmware & this has cleared the 'clicks' which is something to cheer about. I tried various headphones with my iPod to see if I could improve the sound quality/volume & found that a cheapish pair of Sony Studio headphones (MDR V150) not only gave better quality but the volume is now enough not to warrent a return!

I've also read that the line out to a home stereo system doesn't deliver enough volume?? Not so! I've hooked up mine using the docking station & a apple branded lead & there's enough volume there to please anyone! I tend to use my iPod more as a home jukebox so this works fine for me.

So basically I've decided to stick with this new iPod & hope that an official update or some techie whizkid finds a cure for the volume issue & makes this lovely bit of kit perfekt!

did you get an european version? if you did, that's the reason why the volume is low.

It appears that the g3 ipod may be using the Wolfson Micro WM8731L instead of the WM8731. The "L" is for low power and has a maximum headphone output of 9 mw into 32 ohms insteado the non-L's 30 mw into 32 ohms.

I did a side by side comparison today of my g3 ipod with a g1 ipod on the same track and indeed the g1 ipod was able to pound out quite a bit more volume.

I'm inclined to agree with sorka. Maximum volume is not wholly dissimilar to players I've owned with 5-10mw outputs into 32 ohms.

Please note I don't consider this a problem unlike the myriad of other bugs found in the unpatched new iPod. It's plenty loud enough for me. I wonder sometimes what some of you are trying to use with your iPod  Sennheiser HD600?

Does this mean that changing the headphones to some others which are not 'low power' will address the isssue of low volume output on the European iPods? Seems too simple!

I want to buy an iPod but the low volume output on Euro iPods is putting me off at the moment.

You can use more efficient headphones (although I've had no problem powering anything up to 100ohms) or closed headphones / earphones.

I bought a 15gb, loaded up, failed to hear it on the underground on the way home, and took it back 2 days later. Volume is way too low. Show me the bit of paper that says i won't sue if i go deaf and i'll sign it. But don't tell me how loud i should listen to my music.

Until the issue is resolved, i'm staying on the sidelines. Contrary to popular belief, this is a worldwide software issue. Yanks are apparently as unimpressed as us. We wait *quietly* in anticipation.
