My party
Not sure if anyone cares, but here's my setup for the party I'm having on the 25th...
20 * 50 foot party tent that some bands are going to play in... the iPod is going to be attached to a Fender Passport 250 on Precision tripod stands...
I have over 2,000 songs on my iPod at the moment, and am going to add some more...
Should I play the songs off a playlist onthe iPod, or over a computer? They will only be used between bands, and songs...

impulse,
i have a similar question. this august, my girlfriend is celebrating her 30th birthday. we don?t have life music, only stuff from the stereo. i?m asking myself if i should use my notebook because of maximum flexibility or if my new "old" 5gb-ipod could do the job either. i don?t like the idea having my notebook at a party with a lot of people and alkohol and so on...
...i only have 600 songs on my notebook an ipod, so the "small" 5gb capacity of the ipod isn?t a issue (jet).
how could i handle the playlists: is it practically to create all kind of playlists on the notebook, transfer them to the ipod and then use them at the party?
any party experienced ipod users out there?
thanks & enjoy your weekend!

I've had good experiences using the iPod to DJ a party. I usually just make up a playlist that's longer than I expect the party to be, so that I don't run out of music, then throw it on random and hope for the best. If you want more control, arrange the playlist the way you want it and play it straight through, or if you're actively DJing, just play whatever songs you think are appropriate.
The advantage to using your laptop is that you could do an on-the-fly playlist, which you can't do on your gen 1 iPod.
Like I said, though, I'm a fan of just picking the songs I want and playing them randomly. Works well with little effort. Just make sure you have the proper items (iTrip/cassette adapter/headphone->RCA adapter, etc.) to connect to the sound system at the party.

think about how many cds djs lug around, thats such a better method, hooking up a pod to a pa
set up would be smokin.

I always wondered why DJ's actually carry CD's. If it were me, i would grab a cheap notebook with a large HD (maybe a decent external also), load any and every song onto the computer and play from that. I was the assistant for 2 weeks to a DJ who would spend 2 hours between packing and unpacking CD's/players each gig, and wondered why this was a "better" way to do it?
Once the ipod goes seemless and a true otg pl (which i hear the new 2.0.1 went), this would be perfect for a DJ. Imagine the scene... HUGE speakers, and an ipod, kinda would look weird, wouldnt it? (ok, maybe a mixer too for vol/amp/ mic.)
Anyone know why DJ's just dont copy CDs onto a computer and go like that? Is it the image(look of someone with all those cds), cost, or supposed sound quality?
Any help would be enjoyed (for my mind at least)

You guys convinced me to use the iPod... Also, the party is in my back yard (a 100 acre field), so if i need my computer, i can easily carry it...
Today I had a problem when I tested the PA system, that some songs when I added played them from the on-the-go playlist didn't play... I'm not sure why... It only does it for the Ataris, and no other bands... I have re-ripped the album on a different computer to see if it's the song file, but it must be the song itself... :( it's a really good band too
Update: Oh, and I got a whole bunch of special lights to add to the setup... A couple rotary ones, strobe, and disco balls... Today I installed all the power cables... A whole 13 different ones that come from my house, barn, swimming pool house, and a second garage... The reason I need 13 is because the bands need to power their stacks, and other equiptment, there are flood lights surrounding the perimeter, and more stuff... I'm expecting about 150 to 300 people now, because it's an aftergrad party (lots of booze), and everyone's coming... if anyone is in my area, feel free to come!
