skipping to next song

So i remember this mentioned a while back, but i may not be searching for it properly but i did try a search...
i press song # 1 in an album to play, for example, and without playing song #1 it skips to song #2...and this can happen when choosing any song in an album not just #1...
Anyone remember if or how we remedied this? any help is appreciated, refresh my memory :)
thanks alot!

# 1 Re: skipping to next song
yeah, if you searched for "skipping" and increased the # of days to search for you probably would have found it. But...

Basically it can happen in one of 3 ways:

1. You have songs that have foreign characters in the file names (such as accents) and you aren't using a program that renames files when it uploads (you can configure ephpod to do this, but it doesn't do it by default I don't believe).

2. You are using ephpod and you have it set to store all songs in the F00 directory on the iPod. Change this to F00-F19 on the Configure Ephpod menu (Advanced tab)

3. You have a corrupted mp3 (you'll need to search the boards for what to do here, there's a program around that will help fix them).

Oh, there is a forth one...it's a bug. ;) But usually it's one of the 3 above.

I have the same problem with mine and I know it is not any of those 3 things you mentioned. I have about 4500 songs on my iPod and it does this with every single one. Most were ripped using iTunes and none have weird characters and none are corrupted. I select a song to play, and after loading for a second, it immediately plays the one after that. I actually just shipped the iPod to Apple for service yesterday, so hopefully they will be able to fix it. I have a feeling it may be hardware related. BTW, I have the 30 GB iPod.

checked step 2 and 3 and it didnt help...not all the songs that skip have accents in them so i do not think it is step 1...any other ideas? i hate to send it to apple figuring they are just going to send it back to me with nothing changed...

Jason:

When you fixed the setting in ephod, you need to wipe your iPod clean and reupload everything. That's the only way to get the tunes re-randomized. Did you do that?

One way to check is to browse your iPod in My Computer, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled and check the size of these folders in the iPod_control/Music directory. See if the # of files in each folder is about the same.

I am having the same problem with my 30gb iPod. I also have a feeling that the mp3's are all ok and there are no foreign characters. I don't want to send my iPod back to Apple because other than this small problem, my iPod works beautifully. I'm thinking it's a bug. Hopefully it isn't, but if it is, hopefully Apple will come out with a fix for it.

I don't think its a bug, because only a small number of people are experiencing the problem. I've given some of my tracks to a friend that has the same computer and the same model iPod and his does not have the problem. My guess would be that it has something to do with the hard drive taking longer than expected to spin up and load. I'll post here once I get my iPod back (for the second time).

I too am having problems with my 15BG new ipod am running the latest software 2.0.1. I'm experience alot of 'lock ups' or the 'screen/songs freezing up' which only seems to be resolved by restarting....which by the way I've had to do 6 times today!

I'm also having problems intermittently when I select a new album to play. Sometimes it just shuffles through the songs and doesn't play any of them and goes back to the main menu. Other times i'll select a particular song in an album and it will jump one song or two songs ahead and start play. If I try to select the last song in an album it hangs there as if its going to play but then just goes back to the main menu without playing.

All these problems seem to be resolved by resetting but...its not really a 'solution' as I am continually having to reset the ipod.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...I'de prefer not to have to send it back to Apple :)

I started getting this problem last night. All of a sudden, if I set up an on the go playlist (Or choose a song at random from the stack on the ipod) it ignores the song I choose displays it's details then starts playing the next song on the list.

Is sending the iPod back to Apple the only solution? I dont appear to be suffering from steps 1-3 above. I have tried multiple resets and they didnt help.

Same problem, songs that played before are now being skipped. Even if I pick the 5th song, after a pause the 6th one starts to play. I tried reformatting the ipod twice last night, NG. I already had ephpod to include the f19 directory. I'm bringing it back to the apple store at lunch, I'll let everyone know what happens.

I Bought my new ipod ( finally ) 10GB. Its fantastic except for 1 gripe that is ruinining the whole experience. Songs are constantly skipping either at the start or at some random point. It also makes these really iritating Whirring/ skipping sounds while song are playing.

What is happening? I 've already wipe it claen using Ephpod and reloaded the songs but it seams to have got worse.

I dont think its things 1,2,3

I read it and checked all the conditions on my ipod:

1. No special characters, happened on every album even if I started at song 5 it would go to song 6.

2. I use mc9, but my ephpod was already set up to use f0 - f19.

3. I can't believe that every mp3 on my ipod (3000) was corrupt, they worked on my daughter's ipod fine.

So I returned it for an exchange at the apple store where I bought it. The tech was very nice, no problems.

Yes I have checked the three steps, but I dont think its any of these steps. Because my pod is skipping in the middle of songs, I was wondering if it may be caused by the program I am using to rip my cd collection. Iam using dbpowerAMP music converter with ephpod and have a 16x Smasung DVD drive to rip the songs. Could it be that my cds are scratched and the converter is having problems copying them without the scrathes.

Any Suggestions?

# 26 Re: skipping to next song
Skipping in the middle of songs was not what I was referring to. The way you can tell if it''s the iPod or not is to see if you get the same skipping when played through your PC. If not then it's either a) you're firewire card or b) the iPod.

Try and isolate it to being the firewire card by syncing your ipod w/another PC (using on of the songs that you've experienced skips on.

If you still have skips, then it's definitely the iPod.

I've been having the same song skip problems with my 2nd gen 10gb.. It doesn't happen every time, but when I select a song it tends to skip that song and start playing the next song on the album/playlist.. It was annoying at first, but it's getting more and more irritating.

A bunch of you seem to have gotten your ipods replaced. Mine's out of it's 30 day warranty, but I've got a CompUSA TAP warranty on mine. I'd love to have one that doesn't skip the song I want to hear, think I can get them to replace it because of this?

I'm not using ephod, I'm just a textbook mac user so that's not it... I listen to a few albums / playlists on there fairly regularly and it doesn't happen every time. There aren't any wierd characters and the files do play so corruption is out. Usually when it happens I can skip back a track to get to where I wanted to begin listening..

I allways assumed it was just a wierd iPod quirk, annoying but normal. Now I see it's not just a quirk but I'm also not sure if it's worth using my TAP on. hmmmm.

Also, does anyone know what CompUSA would do with my older 10gb? would I get the new and $100 cheaper ipod without wired remote which I have, or would they substitute in the 15gb which costs the same and gives me the remote like I had with the 10gb.

# 31 Re: skipping to next song
My new ( around a month old) 30gb iPod just started doing this yesterday.

I noticed it after I added about a gig's worth of music to it. At first I thought it was just the new playlists that were messed up, but now I'm finding it's playlists that used to play correctly too.

What mine is doing is anytime I tell it to play a song, it displays the information for that song, and I can fell the iPod drive clicking away.. then it plays the next song in the list. I can hit the "Previous" button to go back to the song that it skipped and it plays fine.. and everything is OK until I start skipping around in the play list.. or in between play lists and then it happens every time I hit the button to start a new song.

My problem isn't corrupted MP3's, or Ephpod, or misnamed Mp3s as I've only used MMJB to upload songs.

I guess I'll have to pull all my Music off my 'Pod and take to back to the Apple store.. unless they will synch a new iPod to my old one! (Old.. yeah.. that's a hoot!)

Man.. I'm NOT looking forward to copying almost 20 gig off my iPod!

So, any official word on what's causing this problem? Did apple get a bunch of bad HD's? or is it a design issue with the ipod?

Hey, for those of you who took your iPod back to the store, how old was your iPod? I just spoke with Apple Support and they said the stores only do exchanges for iPods purchased within 5 days.

He said since mine was around a month old, I'd have to send it in for service which I'm really NOT looking forward to doing.

# 33 Re: skipping to next song
This has been a problem since gen1 iPods. So I doubt it's a bad batch of HDD's.

If you want them to address it, post the issue on their feedback page ( http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html)

Oh.. My iPod Woes...

So.. I saved all my songs and stuff and took my iPod in to the Apple store. I called first and told the guy that I had to have my iPod in time for my Vacation on Thursday. I was told to "bring it in, we'll take care of you"... So I took it in..

The tech there wasn't willing to admit it was a hardware issue unless he could keep my iPod and test it. Testing is done by reformating the iPod with an Apple and loading it with iTunes. Windows users be darned, the only way to test an iPod is with Apple by gosh!

He told me he would have the test results by tomorrow evening and if it tested defective he would order the parts for a repair, either on Wednesday or Thursday morning and they would arrive "in a day or two".

huh? What happened to the "We'll take care of you" and my need to have my iPod on Thursday morning?

Oh.. it seems they didn't have any 30gig iPods in stock.. Now Why the heck didn't the guy on the phone tell me that in the first place! I could have told him it wasn't a software issue!

However, to please the Apple gods, I reformated and reset my iPod as a test. I Downloaded 4 albums and 4 playlists to it. Imagine my surprise (none) when it STILL DID IT!!

It's a freaking hardware issue people!!!

Well it is and it isn't. It can be caused by either software (see my earlier posts) or it can be caused by the "hardware bug".

So, that's what makes it so difficult to resolve. Posting feedback to Apple about this will get the problem resolved eventually.

Now.. I wonder if there is an Apple Store in Orlando or Key West that could do the repair..hmm.. I've only got a 20gig drive in my laptop so I couldn't take all my music and restore my iPod even if I could get it repaired..

Well, my first stop after I got back from vacation was at the apple store. I didn't even go home. I walked in.. they remembered me and filled out a simple form.

Then they told me I could keep my iPod until the new one came in.

OK... final update on this...

I called the Apple Store on Wednesday.. and got put on hold for 20 minutes. After I hung up and called back in, the guy told me that my iPod should arrive on Thursday and that they would call me.

On Thursday, at 4:45 (just before leaving work) I hadn't received any calls, so I called them again. I was told my new iPod was in and that they just hadn't gotten around to calling yet.

I went directly to the Apple store to swap out my iPod.

The guy at the counter COULDN'T find it!! Finally after about 30 minutes of waiting, they finally found my iPod and brought it out still in the shipping box from Apple. I opened it up and there inside was a brand new 30gb iPod!

The first thing I did was put it in it's new protective case and then went home and reloaded it.

All I did to reload it was copy the iPod_control (or something like that) directory on to the new iPod. This copied all my music and playlists. I've not had a single problem with this new iPod!

Oh.. one thing that did surprise me... The new iPod came with version 2.02 of the software and my 2.01 PC wouldn't work with it. I ended up having to downgrade the iPod to 2.01 which was the lastest version avaliable from Apple.com.

Anyway.. it's working fine and I have no problems with it..

Are people's iPods still having this problem?

Sadly, my iPod has started doing this sometimes when i go from one playlist/artist/album to another... :(
A couple of days ago the iPod went completely nuts, it frose I tried resetting it numerous times (with and without power) but only the folder with !-mark showed up. Then I plugged it to the computer and it kept displaying sad iPod signs on the screen (without getting connected to the comp.)
But after 5 or so tries at putting the iPod in firewire mode (holding back and forward) I succeded and it showed up in "my computer". Then after a couple of tries I managed to get the firmware reloaded (format and new install) and it stopped showing the weird signs on the screen.
But it's still doing the skipping songs thing. :(

Don't know if I should try go and get it replaced?

# 41 Re: skipping to next song
The track-skipping is a defect. A friend of mine and I both have 30-gig iPods, one with about 8 gig of music and the other with more than 20. On a long road trip, both iPods exhibited the track-skipping behavior, eventually doing it about 80 percent of the time if not more.

My friend uses iTunes on the Mac; I use Ephpod on an IBM. My iPod was totally cleared and then I dumped my entire collection onto it. Not sure about the other one.

As irritating as the bug itself is that now it has become almost impossible to reproduce. After a couple of days of disuse, I could only get the thing to skip a song once in about 20 attempts.

Has anyone identified the conditions for this bug?
Stokestack at 2007-11-15 14:57:30 >
# 42 Re: skipping to next song
I only know the certain ways to reproduce it I outlined in my earlier posts.

If you're using ephpod, make sure you've got the option set to store your tunes in folders F00 through F19 (it stores them in F00 by default which is not correct).

I think that the problem caused by bad sectors on iPod hard disk. it's why behavior is so similar when file corrupted itself or due bad sectors. I've seen some post here where was explained how to start internal iPod procedure to check disk. So, you can find an answer is there soft or hard ware problem.

Hi guys. Adam, none of the conditions you mentioned apply in our case. My songs are distributed amongst all 20 directories, and there are no funky characters. I edited all the info myself.

Thanks!

As expected, the disk scan reported no problems.

I'm pretty convinced it's a timeout problem when reading either the directory or the file. If you go into the iPod with Explorer and manually delete a file and then try to play it, the same behavior results: dropping down to the next file in the list. The delay isn't as long, however, as it is when the erroneous skipping behavior occurs.

If a file can't be found, the iPod should display an error message saying so. But it is typical of Apple to hide critical information, as a "favor" to the user.
Stokestack at 2007-11-15 15:02:43 >
# 47 Re: skipping to next song
You may also make file name longer than 32 characters and iPod will skip it, although you can play this file from iPod drive using media player. Anyway, if iPod skips files randomly, then it means that it needs to be replaced.

I have the 3G 40gig and have the same skipping problem. After a song is skipped, and I press "back", it plays the song without a problem. Just very annoying having to do this all the time.

# 49 Re: skipping to next song
Webbie,

that's exactly what mine was doing as well. It also passed all the hard drive tests, but it took a LONG time to do so. In the normal computer world, taking a long time to complete a chkdsk or scandisk is a sign that the drive is going bad and has some hard to read or partially bad sectors on it.

When my 30 gig started doing the skipping thing, it would take 3 hours to run the HDD test on it and then it would pass.. eventually the Apple store agreed to replace it.

You've paid a lot of money for your iPod, you shouldn't have to live with anything that annoying about it. Take it back or call Apple. They were very helpful in fixing my problem.
