3G only 9mw per channel????

I just finished pouring over the data sheet for the Wolfson WM8731. The "L" version states max output at 9 mw into 32 ohms or 18 mw into 16 ohms. When this was mentioned earlier, I was hoping it was misread. Now I'm hoping it's misprinted, because according to a reviewer who took photos of the chipsets on ipoding, the new 3G uses the WM8731L.

If this is the case, then the 3G headphone power has dropped 70% from the last ipod.

See http://www.ipoding.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=1141

I can't tell from the photos if it is the L version. Does anyone have any info on this? Are we going to need to call Apple on this and have them update their spec sheet for the 3G to lower the output from 60mw to 18mw? Could they have just forgotten?

Depending on where you are, this may indeed be the case. The European iPods have some serious volume limitations and I believe their specs are listed differently. This thread (http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=18080#post18080) has a lot more info on that particular problem. If I'm entirely wrong about your issue and you're in the U.S. or Canada, etc. without the limitations then just ignore me. :D

I think the iPod can play loud enough. When it is the loudest i can still listen to it, but most of the time I have it on 50-75% - I have some sennheiser MX400 and some Sony D66 "eggoes". Els get a mini amplifier. Either you can build your own or buy one, you can get 'em in "pocket size"

That won't really help much on the go. Most portable amplifiers only screw up the sound. Many of my mp3s have been adjusted by mp3gain so that certain frequency ranges that sometimes get loud don't clip with the stupid DSP eq. If they had hardware EQ, this would probably not be an issue.

At any rate, this isn't a debate about how much power is enough. It is is a question of how much power is actually there on the g3.

I couldn't help but notice that apple has quietly removed the headphone output power from the their specs online.

To me this would be quiet confirmation of the new 9mw per channel output. Anybody buy a 3g pod lately? What does the manual state?

Manual makes no reference to technical aspects, nor any other documentation that comes with a 3G iPod. The volume is PLEANTY loud enough for both my home theater system and headphones. This might be part of the European iPod volume limitation.
