Tried to update, failed, now restore wont finish

Hey folks,
I tried updating my new ipod to 2.0.1. It had been working fine since I got it about a month ago. Now when I told it to update it got towards the end and then gave me a "write error". It suggested i restore.
So thats what i did.
Then it said can't restore. Then the ipod wouldn't mount. I restarted it by pressing the menu/play buttons and then it started responding again.
It said the firmware version was wrong. So I started a restore on it... that was an hour ago and it is still saying "your ipod has been restored to factory settings. Please leave the ipod connected and wait while it completes the restore process."
Are restores supposed to take this long?
I had about 10GB of stuff on my ipod, could it be taking time to format it?
When i installed the ipod when i bought it, it worked fine. Does it do a restore when you initially install it?
I'm running it through the firewire port on my Audigy. It hadn't given me any problems before so I figure its working fine.
Any help would be very welcome.

I don't know if this is safe or not... but it seems to have worked.
the restore program wouldn't let me quit so i reset the ipod while it was connected.
This made the restore program respond.
I restarted the computer. My ipod was fine, and it had the new firmware loaded on.
Thats all.

Cheers

:)
