Can iPod Hookup Directly to Dig. Camera?
I'm a professional photographer and I'm considering buying an iPod, mostly to use it for portable storage for very large digital photo files. I know I can move files onto the iPod from my iBook, but does anyone know if there is software available for the iPod which will allow me to connect the iPod directly to my Nikon professional digital SLR camera and have the files go directly from the camera to the iPod while I am shooting?
Thanks for any advice.

Lots of people would really like to have that functionality, but I haven't seen it implemented yet. :(

Cate's right - it cannot be done (yet), nor has Apple commited to supporting it at any time in the future.

it can't be directly, but if you need to store the pics, just hook the camera to a laptop (a small one with firewire, or usb), and send it to the iPod... a 2 step process, but it beats getting different flash cards out everytime one is full

What is the point of that? From my understanding, he wants to be able to carry the more portable iPod with him instead of a notebook, presumably so that all he'll need while on a shoot would be a camera and a small storage device. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like you can use the iPod for this purpose at present.

Well i knew what his problem was, and that's why i said it can't be done directly... He was thinking about buying an iPod, so I told him the shortest way of doing it, so he will still be interested in the iPod...

LOL he's a professional.
i doubt he uses itty bitty flash cards.
prolly the 1 GB ibm microdrive. :P

I too am a photographer (just starting college now). I find that I don't really like filling my 15GB full of photos and back up documents. It doesn't leave enough space for all my music! Instead just get a digital wallet. They are REALLY simple to use. Just pop in the flash card/microdrive/etc... and they instantly transfer all your photos to a seperate file. You can get some that will even show you the photos. Others can play music too. There are a ton of them out there, and some can even be hooked up to a portable CD-RW drive and you can burn to a CD without a computer. Just start searching for them on photo sites (photographyreview.com, dpreview.com, popphoto.com, etc...).
Hope that helps some!

I know that he wouldnt use CF cards, but my point was that they are oversized, and don't have a lot of space on them...
Unless you are taking large pictures (size, and quality), then I see not how you could take up over 1 gb of space with pics... Unless your rapid on the button...
I don't know too much about photography (my dad does though... he ownes 4 companies in Europe), so if I'm wrong about something, correct me :)

They're not that oversized, and the largest solid state CompactFlash card there is I think is 512MB. Anything larger would be the IBM Microdrives' territory.
# 10 Re: Can iPod Hookup Directly to Dig. Camera?
Actually, you are both wrong. CF card are mostly superior to microdrives in many ways. They are practically impervious to shock and even water. I know someone who actually lost their CF card in a small pond (just a simple 16MB that came with the digi cam) and then when it started drying up found it covered in mud. They rinsed it in water and it was perfectly fine. Microdrives on the otherhand are much more fragile because they aren't solid state, but an actual drive. Also, CF cards are now available in 4GB size, so there are really no more advantages to microdrives (except maybe price as CF cards begin to hold more, the 4GB cost around $1,400). New Lexar CF cards also have Write Acceleration technology which means date is moved to them faster, great for long bursts.
Sorry, I probably went way further than I needed to, but I'm a photo nerd :) I just also happen to LOVE my iPod, so I mingle with the audio/video/computer nerds everyonce in a while:D

Actually, all thirteen and a half of you are wrong: the most superior drive is my sex drive, though Lake Shore Drive is a close second.

Because sex is a good thing. Yeah baby yeah!

I was going more for "silly". Anyone who's posted here for very long knows I stand no chance of looking cool. ;)

Sex isn't a four-letter word! ;)

Now there is the Belkin Media Reader, however it's not clear if it supports a Microdrive and also not clear if you can download to it without fully recharing the batteries each time.
