New iPod: How long is standby (sleep) time from full charge?
When I was travelling and I most needed my iPod, I had the iPod packed away at around 6 - 7pm but forgot to fit the dock slot protecting cover. Some old Polo wrapping got wedged in the slot, and I next started the iPod at 5pm the next day in heathrow and to my dismay... DEAD IPOD... I PANICKED!!
Ran to the nearest wall socket and *phew* it powered up..and yea it was FLAT. Another hour later i discovered the bit of alu jammed in (from my first powering up earlier). Used my mechanical pencil and got it ALL out...
Since then I have not had a chance to test a full 24hr standby bat life...
Could anyone please confirm the times they are getting and what I should get on average for a 2 - 3 week old iPod (15gig) ?
Thanks,
Mike

what?

okay I found the solution here ;)
By having the iPod sleep with the HOLD switch on causes the battery to discharge in 12hrs to flat... with HOLD off it will run for 3days or so...and I'm testing this...

Has anyone ever managed to leave their iPod alone to drain it on hold for a full drain? I just can't imagine not using it for its intended purpose!

Actually, since I purchased my Gen3 30 GB iPod on May 2nd, my old Gen1 10 GB iPod has been sitting unused, with the Hold switch ON.
I have been keeping an eye on it, waking it up every 5 or 6 days (after turning OFF the Hold switch, of course! ;)) and starting to play a song (so the HDD will spin up) and checking the battery indicator. My intent has been to not let the battery drain completely.
I have had to recharge it only once in the 5 weeks it has been idle, and that was after 3 weeks of non-use.
So, I have been getting the 14 to 28 days of battery life (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61434) that Apple claims for iPod when it is asleep.

didn't know this, quite bad!

Okay, I left the iPod sleeping with the hold switch set to off from 2:50hrs to 14:45hrs and its still on full charge, where as when I had it for sleeping for 6hrs with the hold on it dropped by 2bars (hence the 12hr death)...
Caterinkia: hehe, I was travelling and was in a car most of the time and we were listening to the radio and stuff, so I wanted to 'preserve' the battery life for my 11hr flight...and this happened (1st time)...!
Tom: Is that 14-28day bat life for Gen2 pods and not Gen3?
Thanks, Mike

Good point - I just noticed the subject of the thread was re: Gen3 iPods.
This was from my Gen1 10 GB iPod. With my Gen3 30 GB iPod, I have had it on standby (with the Hold switch ON) for as much as 2 or 3 days, but no longer. I couldn't tell you what the battery indicator read after that time.

so let me get this straight. The hold switch defect does not affect the 30Gigs? My iPod is fine with the hold switch off...

If by "hold switch defect", you mean what you reported earlier; i.e., that your iPod's battery drained completely after 12 hours with the hold switch set, then, no, my 30 GB iPod definitely does not have that problem.
I sometimes go for a day or two withour listening to my iPod. When not in use, its hold switch is always set. The battery has never drained on me during these periods of non-use.

yup, sounds like a prob with the 15gig then, cause there is another thread about this EXACTLY...

It's been 48 hours and bars are still fully charged.
But I must admit...6 hours of non-stop playing time is a bit short...
Hopefully they can extend this through firmware upgrade.
