Are ID3v1 tags necessary any more?
Just wondering if anyone knows if it is worth maintaining ID3v1 tags in MP3 files now that ID3v2 is the predominant ID3 tag read by recent software.
Anyone know if it is ok to simply wipe the ID3v1 tags? Is there any negative effect if an MP3 has only ID3v2 tags??

I've wiped my v1s.
Any fairly recent software, and the iPod, will read v2. I don't think there is any reason to keep v1 as well.

it?s ok to wipe them. i?d recommend it in fact. there are no neg. effects in doing this (like henrik said in his post ;) ).

Why would u reccomend it tho? Cause won't the only thing wiping them will do is take time right? Surely the 1byte the info takes up isn't worth the ages it'll take to whipe it all?
or is there some other reason to do this? enlighten me plz..

sometimes the ipod shows problems with duplicate files because of having both tag types. this was addressed by a firmware upgrade quite some time ago (can?t remember which one exactly). often when songs are tagged as v1 and v2 the title is copied from v1 to v2. in effect the titles are cut off (for long titles) even in v2, because v1 doesn?t support that many characters. once you retype the v2 characters, they are displayed correctly even if both tags are used.
so, you don?t have to, but i think it makes more sense, since the v1?s aren?t used anyway.
use a tagging program to wipe all v1?s. that hardly takes any time at all.

do a search on tagging programs. i use drTag. many like id3taggit as well. download them and see which one you like best.

And mrm's right, it doesn't take any time at all. I know in id3-tagit, you just hightlight the songs and click "delete id3v1 tags". Done...

I know with mp3studio it does take some time. I batch wiped clean some fields in my tags and it took about 20 minutes. (Over 20,000 files)
