Wow, my iPod formatted without me knowing! Read on...

So my friend that lives a few blocks away needed some files (larger than 4 GB). There was no way in hell that I was going to risk getting my cable connection capped on sending 4GB worth of files to him, so I stuck everything on my 30GB iPod and went off to his house with FireWire and setup CD. He has the same PC as me, so when I got there, we plugged in FireWire, iPod, and installed the software. Everything was done, and we went to look in the iPod H: drive to get the files, but it was empty! I figured he had the "do not show hidden file" option toggled on, but I couldn't have been more wrong. My 23GB+ collection of music/files/contacts were gone! A bit disappointing, but luckily I still have it all saved on my PC.

The moral of the story is, don't connect your iPod to a foreign computer because it will format it and you will lose all your stuff.

Now I am busy loading all my music back on. WAHOO!

I am going to assume that your friend's computer's program had auto-sync set up, therefore it erased everything on your iPod that wasn't on your friend's computer.

I don't think you should have to install anything, when using the iPod as an external HDD.

I put some stuff on my 2nd gen WinPod, and then plugged it into my friend's Windows XP computer, and it appeared as a drive. No extra software needed.

Ahhh, thanks for the heads up. I guess I should have made a post before-hand asking how to go about doing this. It didn't auto-sync, I know that for a fact, because we didn't install MusicMatch, JUST the software that recognizes iPod (I guess you would call that the iPod software!).

Thanks

When you install the software it will format your ipod. Why did you install the software at all...

you shouldnt need any sfotware installed. If you just plug it into the firewire it should come up as a removeable harddrive. This is without music match, or anything for me (windows XP pro)

Ya, I knew that part, but when I plugged it into his computer, it didn't recognize it as a drive, so I figured why not install the software. I didn't know it would format it!

We all learn from our mistakes...
