Why not OK to charge in case?
I have a Vaja classic case for my 2nd gen. iPod. Everytime I slide the iPod in/out of the case, the stitching inside scratches the front of the iPod. So, I have resorted to never taking the iPod ut of the case, and this means I also charge the iPod while in the case (leaving the front flap open). Is this OK? What happens if I continually charge my iPod in the case? Thanks.

It may overheat - Apple say don't do it, so they must know best.

Hi,
to your question, I have a friende who did the same as you except the tase was different. he had a neoprene case around the pod (1st Gen)!
He used to charge it while in the case. It became overheated and melted the electric inside.
he wanted money of the firm who produces the neoprene case, but it was written on an sheet which is delivered with the neoprene case!
That is what I know! I take mine out for charging!

I dosn't produce any heat when you charge it directly from your wall. I leave my iSee case in. Not a single problem.
If you plug your iPod into your computer over night for "charging", it's going to fry the whole thing, with case or not.
So really, charge it using AC, not PC.

Do search the old fora, please!
In short: Apple say don't do it. Apple employ expert engineers and thermodynamacists. Why argue with their advice?
The iPod's steel back is a heat sink and heat exchanger. Any heat exchanger relies on maximum continuous surface area being in contact with the cooling media (in this case air). The back is specially shaped to allow some air even when laid flat on a solid surface. Covering any of it is therefore a bad idea. Covering it with an insulating material is an even worse idea.
While the Pod's HD spins up when charging through a computer's Firewire port, and does not when using the wall- or car-charger, it can still get hot (as reported on numerous occasions, not least by Madpict) when charging from the wall or car, if not quite AS HOT as it does with charging via PC.
Better to be safe than sorry, I'd have thought, and better a scratch or two than a dead Pod.

How about using the AC adaptor when playing music (not just charging)? Do you suggest that I ALWAYS take it out of the case, even when I intend on just listening to it when plugged in to the AC? Thanks.

What about people that uses pda screen protectors? I never remove those because if i do they become useless. So should i be removing these pda screen protectors everytime I recharge my battery?

No, as long as you don't have a PDA cover on the back. The back is metal for a reason--it's a heat sink.. If you have them on the back take them off, the front is fine because heat isn't disapated from the front.

2 questions:
1. Should I take my iPod out of the case when I am listening to it and also have it plugged in to the AC adaptor?
2. as an edit to the very first post on this thread, i ONLY charge my iPod through the AC adaptor. in this case, is it still OK to leave it in the case when charging?
Thanks.

i dont think charging is that big of a deal, but transferring files from the computer to the ipod is...i'm not sure tho...whenever I have my ipod charging and unmounted from my computer, it doesnt produce that much heat, but only when it is mounted does it heat up significantly.

This is one of those decisions you will have to make yourselves. You have asked the question, and you have been told by both moderators and others that you should remove your iPod from the case when recharging.
If you decide to ignore the advice given here and by Apple, the maker of the iPod, and you fry your iPod's guts then you were warned.
Apple do not advise you remove the case when using the iPod to listen to music. They produce a case to protect the iPod. If you listen while connected to the AC then take it out of the case.
IlIlIlIlIl,
As Jacko stated I have found out it heats up - I don't charge my iPod when it is in the case. Full stop. It's up to you if you follow my advice.
