Audigy Platinum Firewire Port Killing iPod
Hi All,
I am in the process of returning my third 30 gig iPod. The first was definitely a legitimate defect, but the next two appear to have been damaged by plugging them into the front firewire port on my SB Audigy.
The strange thing is that the first iPod I had worked fine connected to the same port for about two weeks before I got a delayed write error when copying a song and then eventually found the iPod drive not spinning up at all.
The second one I plugged in had a strange gray display as soon as I plugged it in and after unplugging it and resetting the iPod it would hang at the Apple logo. Nothing I tried would help. I eventually put it in Diagnostics mode and ran the Hard Drive scan. It came back with a read error.
I just received my third one yesterday and this time when I plugged it in everything thing seemed fine with the display, but I noticed that the iPod wasn't detected and when I went to use the controls I found it locked up. Now this iPod is in the same boat as my last one.
I guess this post has a few goals.
First I guess it serves as a potential warning that a faulty firewire port can kill your iPod very easily.
Second I was wondering if anyone had seen this or know a way to fix the problem.
And finally, what is a good, reliable firewire card for a PC? I don't want to have this happen again.
TIA,
Rich

Audigy = Bad Card.
Do a search of these forums or the old forums and you'll find tons of discussions on it.
The root of the problem is that creative decided not to support the IEEE1394 standard, they decided for some unfathomable reason to create their own standard (SB1394). Needless to say, the iPod is designed to adhere to the standard that's should been set, not some made up one by some company.
So, your solution is to ditch the Audigy. Cards I recommend (in order):
1. Adaptec 4300 (the best)
2. Orangelink Card from Orange Micro
3. Any cheap card w/the VIA chipset usually works fine.
You probably didn't "break" the other iPods, but it's very possible that the Audigy did something...it wouldn't surprise me....

Thanks for the recommendations Adam. I will look into them. As for breaking the iPod, I do believe it did something physical to it as the Hard Drive Scan fails with a Read Error and I can't get it to go past the Apple Logo even when plugged directly into a power outlet. I think what happens is that the Audigy probably causes a corrupt sector to be written to the iPod and that makes it so it won't boot. Either way I am going to buy a reliable card so I don't have this problem anymore.
Thanks again,
Rich

Well, you certainly sound right about what happened. Good luck w/a new card, for the most part you just plug 'em in, Windows finds them and it just works. That's how it was w/my Orangelink card.

I plugged it into my audigy fw (not audigy 2), and it worked fine. I now use the port in the front of my antec case. The front port wasn't working at first for some reason, but now it does:D .
I hope the audigy didn't do any damage to my ipod. It's working fine now, so maybe not.:D
