Weird Bug with IPod
Ok, I believe this bug hasn't been mentioned yet but I could be wrong. At least half the time when I select a song to be played on my 3rd gen 30gb, the song gets displayed for a couple seconds on the screen but all I hear is the static "pop" and then it skips to the next song and never plays the one I selected. Sometimes I will go back and forth numerous times and will have to keep selecting the song over and over until it finally plays. This isn't with any specific song because I've done it with many different songs. I doubt it's my mp3's because I've gotten them from many many sources and they all play fine in everything else I've played them in.
This bug is SERIOUSLY driving me out of my mind. Anytime I drive anywhere I take the IPod with me and I'll sometimes pull it out for a second to select a song really quick then put it back so I can focus on not killing myself in an accident. Then, the song never plays but skips right away to the next one and I have to pull it out again and try to get the song to play. It frustrates me so much sometimes that I just want to launch the thing out the window.
PLZ tell me this is a firmware problem that Apple may hopefully address.

Have you checked to make sure that none of your mp3 files are corrupt? There seems to be less of the popping and skipping if your files are extremely clean.

Pay particular attention to the ID3 tags. MP3s w/ corrupt data, or non-English characters, in the tags have been know to be skipped over by iPod.

Also, check the file names of the files that skip. And it can depend on what program you're using to upload.
Most good programs rename files when it uploads them to the iPod to some random filename (MC9 & Xplay), others will maintain the filename (or some semblance) and this can cause problems.
So the fix is: make sure there are no foreign characters in your file names, such as accents or umlauts. If you're using on of the programs mentioned that renames them, then this isn't the issue.
If you're using ephpod, it can be set up to rename files. It's under the Configure Ephpod section.
Also, if you're using ephpod, it used to default to store all songs in the F00 directory on the iPod. When it does this, the iPod has to seek through a larger list of files to find the appropriate song. All other programs distribute the songs randomly across 20 directories (F00-F19). You can set up ephpod to do this as well (it should be the default but isn't). Under Configure Ephpod on the Advanced Tab is the setting where you can specify the directories, make sure you've got it set to F00-F19.
Aside from that there's been a bug around for a while where the iPod will skip the first song in a Playlist periodically, but that's fairly rare.
I don't know where the "corrupt mp3" issue came from. I never heard that theory before except when the new iPods came out folks started claiming that was the cause. I've got my doubts about that one...

Thanks for the help, just one quick thing.
I don't see where in Ephpod's configuration I can set it to rename files.

I had this problem, but with only 3 or 4 songs. Used manual update in iTunes to delete them and copy them from the library again. Working fine now :)
