Annoying Buzzing...Please Lend Your Expertise!

I installed my iPod in my car a few months ago. I have it hardwired through an AUX IN on the back of the unit. When the iPod is not charging, everything sounds amazing and works great. However, when the iPod is charging, there is a buzz coming through my speakers. (It's similar to a buzz sound that I've heard when my cell phone rings next to my computer speakers).

I have a G2 10GB and a G3 30GB. I've tried both and 3 different car chargers. I've also tried the Belkin car kit. (Also, when the Belkin is plugged in to the outlet (BUT NOT INTO THE IPOD), I still hear the noise. However, when I unplug the audio cable from the iPod, the noise stops (for all the possible configurations). (As most probably know, the Belkin has a line out on the cigarette lighter plug in). I'm assuming that when the iPod is drawing a current, something interferes with the audio signal and the audio cable carries the buzz to the speakers.

Is it my (relatively) cheaper head unit? Is this anything that I can fix?

As you can probably tell, I know absolutely nothing about cars and electric systems in general.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

CAR: Jeep Grand Cherokee
HEAD UNIT: JVC KD-SX8350

You might try searching for ground loop posts. this sounds like it may be caused by a ground loop and these problems have been discussed a few times around here and i think solved by getting a filter or something from Radio Shack. anyway, i doubt it is your car stereo or head unit, i get no problems and i have a Ford factory unit.
btw, with the 3G ipod, have you tried both the dock and headphone jack for sound out? any difference?

Well you've eliminated the iPod and cables as the problem.

And it sounds like your using the cigarette lighter as a charger.

Try connecting the audio only from your iPod to your deck. Then, while iPod is running on batteries, plug the cigarette lighter in to draw current and listen for the buzzing. If you hear it, then you've narrowed the problem down to the cigarette lighter.

If that's the case, here are a couple ideas.

Use the belkin auto kit and have it hard wired for power. This can be done at any good car stereo shop. This leaves your cigarette lighter free and allows you to mount the belkin behind the dash somewhere.

Or, like bif mentioned, check the grounding of your cables. Easier said than done as you have to take your dash apart and decipher the cables and what they do.

Thanks alot for the advice. The problem is definitely the cigarette lighter. I will take it into a car stereo install shop and talk to them about it. I will update everybody when it's done.

Thanks again,

Kris
