Car receivers...

I have to get a new head unit in my car since my current does not have an aux input. What are some good head units that work well with the ipod? Actually, any info on getting a good setup for my ipod in my car would be helpful. I want to do a hardwire install, no FM transmitter crap.

I have an older aiwa which works great. I don't have the model number off hand, but I see on their website (aiwa.com) that all their CD receivers have AUX-in.

I just bought a Blaupunkt Casablanca with the option of two Aux inputs for just over 100 bucks. I installed it last night with one of the Aux inputs, and it works great. (I am still waiting for the second adapter to be shipped) I ended up getting the stereo, two adapters, and all the install stuff for under $150. Next step is to hardwire it, but I am still trying to figure out how I want to go about that. Luckily this forum is filled with tons of info.

I just bought the JVC SX-990. I've had it for 3 weeks now and it ROCKS! Nice display (not too busy), plenty 'o power and the iPod
plugs right into it. Looks great!

Now if I could only find a 12" black 3.5mm gold plated cable!

Well if you are a fan of Sony head units the CDXCA900 is one of the few Sony units with a proper AUXIN on the back (requires no extra adapters).

I recently did an iPod install with an older Sony head unit and the XA-300 AUXIN adapter and the sound quality was excellent. Sadly some low-life recently burgled my house and stole the head unit front panel...:( . So I am now in the situation of needing to replace the head unit.

I think I'll go for the CDXCA900 as its one of the least "fussy" looking units I have seen in the price range.

Anyone interested in a hardly used Sony XA-300 AUX-IN unit? ;)

Cheers,

Chris

kojak,

"Now if I could only find a 12" black 3.5mm gold plated cable"

There's a 12" mini-plug to mini-plug cable thats available at Radio Shack. Just go to www.radioshack.com and do a search for

Catalog #: 42-2497

or go to:

http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F007%5F002%5F003%5F007&product%5Fid=42%2D2497

Its not black or gold plated but it is white which matches the color of the iPod and the Belkin iPod stuff on the market.

Some thigns to consider:

If the ehad unit in your car is the stock headunit AND it came stock with an amplifier (like my monsoon sound system in my 02 Jetta), switching to an afetrmarket HU will produce inferior quality.

1.
Your best option would be to buy an adapter (mine cost $88), and unless your planning on buying a piece of crap HU, a new one will run you a minimum of $200.

2. If you insist on changing the HU, and you DO have a stock amp, change the amp too. And change it to one with crossover for the channels so that you can filter out the frequencies necessary. Stock amps are made to work with stock HUs. I am speaking frmo experience. I popped in an awesome Pioneer HU and suffered quality considerably. Once i popped in a Sony amp, it sounded better. All said and done, however, I poped all the stock stuff back in (HU, and amp) and bought an adapter, and the sound is the best it has been.
