iPOD in car - phones/line out

I've been thinking about getting my iPOD connected to my car-stereo, but how should I connect it? The iPOD doesn't have a line out on the actual unit. I can't use my dock in the car, too unpractical.
So, you guys that have your iPOD in the car; In what way have you solved this matter? Do you use the phones out? It's not good... I want to use a cigarette-lighter-recgarger together with a line out. It should be possible since the dock has it.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

There is a product with a charger that has a line out on it, can't remember what it's called but look for it, you should find it.

And regarding the car situation. Depending on what Head unit/Source Unit/Cd player (they're all the same thing) You might have a line out, if it's just a stock cd player then you wont have one.

If you do use the line in with your phono out.
If you don't there's two ways, 1. Use the tape in casette player method otherwise, use an Itrip maybe? Though i've heard mixed reviews from the Itrip.

My mate wants to buy an Itrip for me just to be able to hear my tunes in his car but i convinced him not to etc..

There's not that many things you can do.

The Belkin Charger is the one with the line out.

I'm not sure why you would say the dock is an impractical solution though. If you can find a way to mount it somewhere, it works great.

One thing to keep in mind. If you ARE using a dock with the Belkin Charger, you MUST use the line out on the dock, not the charger.

The Belkin adapter defeats the purpose of the line-out by including an "amplifier" in the housing! Belkin is at a loss to explain why you'd want a redundant amp (and a cheap-### one at that) in the signal path, when your head unit is doing the amplification.

Aside from the sound-quality concerns, you'd then have two volume controls to fiddle with. The lack of common sense in the design is astounding.

Also astounding is that, after adding the much-needed line-out to the iPod, Apple doesn't seem to sell a single cable that provides access to it. As if people are going to buy a dock (which, by the way, costs $40 and is nearly worthless out of the box because it doesn't come with a cable) and have it sliding around in their car.

How depressing that people have the technology to make great products, but fail at making the simplest design decisions.

You could always do what Kloh did with his dock, that way you get optimal sound and a cool installation. (What I am about to do)

I can see the reasoning behind Belkin putting a level out on their adapter, essentially it works like a Pre-Amp in a high end stereo (on a much smaller scale). The line out on your iPod may be at a slightly different level than the CD or FM on your head unit, this allows you to easily moderate that level so that you do not have to turn down your head unit when switching between FM and iPod. I don't really think that this was a design flaw on Belkin's part, more of a way to let you avoid spending more money on an additional device that would provide the same function.

What the iPod really needs is bluetooth!

Well, the level-matching argument is the best excuse I've heard; I'll give you that. But in reality, it doesn't quite hold water, since users concerned about level matching could already use the iPod's headphone output.

Plus, people already tolerate huge disparities in levels between the car radio's own functions: radio, tape, and CD. Some radios have a manual level-matching feature (I have a Pioneer that does), but I'm guessing that they're very rare.

No car radio made today should come without an auxiliary input. With so many portable players around, manufacturers aren't just missing the boat; they're looking very ignorant.

What these manufacturers really need to do is start incorporating bluetooth into their designs. Cell phones are beginning to come equipped with this technology, and with all the upcoming mandates for handsfree use, manufacturers could really help out us consumers by just making this stuff come stock. That way Apple could see the light and add bluetooth into the iPod!
