front aux vs. rear rca head unit?
thinking about buying a new head unit for my Eclipse.
Looked at JVC, sanyo and aiwa unit because they have front
aux inputs. Lots of head units have rear rca connectionable
setups.
Here's the question: will either front aux or rear rca produce
better or worse sound? Is there any impedence difference,
or signal loss? Other than cable issues, any reason to
choose one over the other to connect the iPod?

from what i know, either connections will usually have the same sound quality to the average person. they are just different kinds of connections. however, rca inputs generally have better sound quality since they provide a better connection and use larger gauge wiring. a larger gauge means less resistance which leads to better sound quality. on the other hand, the front aux input (also known as 1/8" input) is very convenient in that you will be able to use multiple devices by easily interchanging them. all in all, if you want the best possible sound quality, go for the rca inputs. if you want the ability to use multiple devices with you head unit, go with the front aux inputs. hope this helps.

From a cosmetic point of view:
1. Connecting to the front AUX will have cables on display.
2. Rear RCA's, if you can mount your iPod nicely will have a better chance of a nice clean install with no cables showing.
Depends on how much effort you want to put into your setup.
boister77 is correct about the sound quality. :D
