Connecting iPod to CD changer in ??

On my stock OEM radio it has a CD/CHG input. It has pins TXD (transmit data), RXD (receive data), left sig, right sig and GND.
Does anyone know how I can fool this input to be used with my iPod? If it matters it's the non-Bose radio in maxima.
thanks

There are adapters so you can use an OEM CD changer input as an aux input. Please do a search.

That's not very helpful for me. Maybe I am a crappy searcher. I can't find anything to help me hook up my iPod directly in my 2000 Maxima SE. Can you help out?

lutador,

As far as I know, if you still have the stock Bose or non-Bose unit there are no aftermarket harnesses for us.

I have come up with some circuitry to toggle the CD/CHG input, but I have yet to test it.

It consists of 2 parts. A switcher to AUX mode and single ended input to differential output amplifier stage, with a gain of 1.

I'll let you know how it turns out when I get to test it.

I wonder if I am having a similar problem. I have a Saab 9-3 with a stock radio. I want to hardwire my iPod into my stereo because I have had dismal luck with the iRock and the iTrip and I do not have a cassette deck. I have no CD changer, although there are inputs for one in the back of the radio. Every car stereo place I go to sends me away (they like to suggest Best Buy or a computer store) because they don't install iPods. I don't get it. There must be some way to hardwire it. Anyone have any ideas?

elwrenn,

I'm not sure about the Saab radio's switching logic level but this is what you could check to see if it possibly works off the same principle. On your CD/CHG input check for labelling (sometimes u have to open the radio to see the labeling):

L+
L-
R+
R-
TXD
COM ON
GND
REQ
RXD
AUX ON

If it does it may work but I can take no resposibility here. I will keep u posted how mine works out.

I don't know if they make adapters for your vehicle models, but you could try rcainput.com or blitzsafe.com.

Thanks gordyhulten,

They don't. They have a harness for the Nissan Quest, ends there. I don't know how different the Quest's radio is from the Maxima, but it probably is or they would have inlcuded the max on the list :(

Hence I have to resort to building it myself.

I did some pretty ehaustive searching online yesterday, including emailing rcainput.com, blitzsafe.com and autotoys.com. Two replies so far, both telling me that I am outta luck and suggesting an FM-Transmitter.

I currently am using a cassette adapter, so I guess I'll stick with that until chorus starts selling adapters!

Autotoys reply:

Hello,
Nothing for NISSANS at this time. FM MODULATOR is the only way to go.
Search under FM modulator at http://store.autotoys.com

From RCAInputs.com:

Sorry but no.
Saab, Volvo, Issuzu, Subaru, Mazda and a bunch of others all use a custom
bus and we do not have adapters for them either.
Your Nissan is in the same boat. Sorry.

My suggestion for you is to get an FM Modulator instead. The one we sell is
very decent. It is not a transmitter unit like most of them you see. Ours
actually plugs into the antenna connection on the back of the radio. This
giving the radio a clean, powered FM signal.

Take a look at it and let me know if you have any further questions.

I have been considering the FM modulator route for my Volvo, who also has a proprietary connection. Has anyone done this and can you comment on the quality of sound?

If I were I in your spot and REALLY wanted the best in-car sound and ease of use from my iPod, I'd just spring for a new head unit with AUX in up front. Several manufactures (Sony, JVC, Blaupunkt) make 'em now, and they aren't all that expensive. Just a thought...

That's why I'm glad my Impreza STi came without a radio - now I can cater my head unit purchase towards what is more convenient for my iPod.

For cars equipped with On-Star this is not an option. Everything goes thru the OEM radio. ( Airbag deployment notification to On-Star, door chimes, auto security) In fact, that is one of the reasons in-line AUX cables are not available for most GM autos built after 2000. The companies that make these adapters do not want to accept liability in the event of failure of one of these devices. (i.e. airbags, emergency request triggered thru On-Star). Blitzsafe was weeks from introducing an AUX cable for this line of vehicles and scrapped it due to the reasons staed above.
Point being, in some cases FM modulation is the only solution. In my experience iTrip works OK and is convenient in terms of portability. Get one for s**ts and giggles. Powered FM modulation works better and is more reliable than any wireless FM transmitter.

Just my 2 cents. Hope this helps some folks!

Happy podding. :D

Well, that makes sense and all, but it sucks. One more reason to never buy a GM. :-)
