iPod car mount?

I've been wanting to setup my iPod in the car and was wondering if there's anything I could use to mount it somewhere. I'm thinking something like this:

Any tips?

I went with what most people do and just go buy a holder at your local Sprint or Radio Shack store. You can even get the cup holder if you really want to but I dont like to have to look down. Heres a pic of a radioshack one in action.

Its connected to the lip on my dashboard.

Here is a link showing it

*Warning* These are extremely high resolutions photos and may take up to a minute to load and you will need to maximise the screen if you have a 15 inch or smaller monitor.

Don't use sticker/suction mounted holders. They simply won't last. Heat in the car for one thing will weaken the sticker over time and you'll probably get a nasty residue on your dash. When you resale your car, you'll regret the mount. Same with any mounts that require you to drill into the dash - it'll lower the resale slightly. The plastic in suction mounts will eventually harden or lose their elasticity and won't suck anymore. Cup holder mounts uses up a cup holder - why would you do that? If it was meant to be a PDA/ipod holder they would have called it that. Also, vent mounts are horrible for 2 reasons - 1) it blocks your AC. 2) Electronics don't like heat - so you better not turn on your heater if your ipod is in the cradle. Get an Akron gooseneck mount - it'll be an easy install with none of the other mounts' faults.

Taskman, that Radio Shack mount looks like a perfect fit for the iPod. How much did it cost? I assume it's much less than comparable ones from Arkon and such? Please post the Radio Shack part number if you have it.

Thanks.

The RS mount is the same as Arkon mount.

You can find Arkon iPod Mount here for $16

Thanks for the replies guys. I've been researching mounts for the past few days and have decided to go with a custom dock solution instead. Even though there are a lot of great mounts out there (the best ones seem to be from Arkon), I've decided I'd rather have a plug-and-play solution that is more "integrated" and can be hidden when I'm not in the car (plus, I love the clean interior of my G35 coupe). I also want to minimize any visibility of wires.

I've got a plan... hopefully, I can get it done this weekend. Will post pics when I'm done.

Regards.

What did you use to attach the Radio Shack holder to the lip of your dashboard? Is it an Arkon mount? Where did you get the mount?

i personally like the mount from sprint pcs. the ball-in-socket joint allows you to angle or move the ipod in many positions which allows for easier viewing. i got mine for $15 from the sprint pcs store.

i have pics posted in this thread:

I just got a Radio Shack A/C Vent Wireless Phone Mount 17-548 and was able to use it in my Lexus RX300. Although it more or less blocks the vent to the right of the steering wheel, I now have my iPod in a handy and viewable position. It's so much more convenient. I use the Belkin auto kit to power it and a cassette adapter to get the audio into the stereo. Definately try this mounting option out if you have an RX300. You can get the same mount cheaper through eBay or something, but I needed the mount like now.

If you're not familiar with the vent mount and the RX300, the vent mount is really designed to work with A/C vents with horizontal vent slats. The RX300 has vertical vent slats. The key is that the vent clips are angled so that when used in a horizontal vent the mount is more or less upright. The angled vent clips are what make vertical vent mounting a little more awkward.

What I did was use the clips vertically AND oriented so that the clips open to the one side. This causes the clips to be angled to one side. This isn't as bad as it sounds because the RX300 vents are angled to begin with so you can compensate for that by how you point the clips. I also moved the support bracket to its alternate position so that it wouldn't touch the hazard lights button. It's hard to explain, but once you play with it you'll see.

Sorry, no pictures.

I'm not a fan of vent mounts, I like the stability of a custom mount. ANyway, here is a good compromise I installed in my Audi A4:

The mount fits the 5g Perfectly.

I agree with JMG...

I also ordered from GBX Direct and got a custom mount built specifically for my car..it's awesome!!

I think the package $40 (it includes the bracket for your car and different mounts to choose from )and all you have to do is get behind your dash for a few minutes..all I had to do was unscrew 2 screws that held the heater controls in place and placed the mount there...then I placed the screws back on with the mount between the screw and the original hole

no drilling and it's VERY clean
