Dolby Headphone
I read somewhere (headwize.com, audio technologies forum) that Apple were keen on surround sound audio formats. Is it possible that future iPods may benefit from Dolby Headphone or SRS Headphone surround sound output?
Would this be a hardware revision or a firmware update?

most likely a firmware update, since DH is a DSP tech, and the iPod has plenty processing power (Dual 90MHz ARM7 CPUs, I read somewhere...it can run Linux). For now, I use MusicMatch JukeBox on my WinPC and I bought the Dolby Headphone plugin...and I use Creative Recorder to record the (Dolby-ized) output of MMJB into WAVs...then I transfer them to Mac, encode in iTunes into AAC, label it as "-DH" and boom. Dolby Headphone on my iPod. :D sounds great, too. only thing about this process is that it's extremely cumbersome.
PS, Apple if you're reading this, I want iPod 2.0.2 to have SRS Wow and Dolby Headphone, as well as a customizable EQ. :D ...like that'll ever happen...who knows...

I don't see what the point would be of having surround sound headphones for music? Isn't most music recorded in stereo (or mono)? Unless it is actually recorded in surround sound, it is just a decision made by some random sound engineer who is remixing the album years after it was made. And if it isn't recorded for surround sound you are allowing computer to take apart music and play it in a fashion that isn't representative of the original recording.
IMO, music released in multi channel on DVD-A or SACD is simply a gimmick to sell copoies of CDs to fans who have already bought LPs, Tapes and CDs of an album. 99% of the time, they don't add anything to the recording and ruin the soundstage because it makes it appear as if instruments are being played behind you or whatever.
Anyway, those of you who have used Dolby headphones, does it really add anything of quality?

Yes! Dolby Headphone technology is great for straight stereo recordings too. The spacial effect takes the sound "out of your head" and places it somewhere outside, in a more natural location. More like listening to speakers, less tiring. Sounds wierd, I know. Try it and see on your PC (PowerDVD & WinDVD have DH).

I think BigIzz has a point here.

Actually the music match Dolby Headphone is only the stereo version of Dolby Headphone. I use it with my Sharp MD and it does improve the sound quality by taking the sound out of your head.
For surround sound you need the following plugin from Lake technology.
I presume since it's an iPod forum your all using Macs?
If you don't have flash you can download it from the link from this site.
OSX required!
Listen to the demos then pop a DVD into your drive (make sure the DVD software isn't already running). The instructions tell you to look for Audio properties menu. That's for PC users. With a Mac it'll be up and running just make sure you have the DVD sound selected as Dolby 5.1 and not Dolby 2.0.
The 5.1 plugin will be retained as long as you don't close the DVD application or turn your Mac off, so you can try it out with various DVD's.
Unfortunately the output through Apples DVD player sucks ... no volume ... so you won't get the full benefit of Dolby Headphone unless you can run an Aux Cable from your Headphone out into a Stereo Receiver and use it's Headphone socket. Then you'll see how good this technology is.
The 5.1 effect takes a while to get used to but after about five or ten mins you should be up and running.
Decent headphones help too :D

Bad Dave,
This came up a couple of weeks back so maybe you'll get your DH and surround sound. These people have a pretty good hit rate but at this stage I'd treat it like a rumor.
-----------------
"According to MacBidoubille (France), the next version of Apples iTunes and their new iTunes online Music Store will support the DVD-A audio format. This will include the ability to burn DVDA".
So maybe an iPod that can play 5.1 with Dolby Headphone.
And is surround music any good?
You bet, it widens the whole field and adds separation to all the instruments so they become a lot clearer. You'll also pick up a lot of detail that would normally get lost in a stereo version. Of course it's dependent on the Sound Engineer doing a half decent mix!
