A more accurate battery guage/charger

So far, i've had my iPod for about a week now. I love this thing!

I would like to see, however, a more accurate battery meter and a better charging monitor system.

Reading or judging how much battery you have left is kinda like judging how much gas you have left in your car when the gas guage is broken, and keeps moving up and down when hit bumps and hills. Sometimes my iPod would read empty, and then (i guess when it spools down the disc) it goes back to a full charge readout. UUUggh. The only way i can tell how much battery i have left is remembering how much i've used the unit.

Also, i hate how the charging mechanism isn't accurate. I could charge the unit until it says it's fully charged, remove the iPod from its cradle, and then put it back seconds later, only to find that it's charging again...for another 4 hours.

Someone said on this forum, that the charging method is by timer only and doesn't really monitor the state of the battery while it is charging...that's crap. I hope this can be fixed, but i highly doubt that if it is hardware related.

Anyway, i wouldn't fear about over/under charging the battery. Lithium-Ion batteries usually have built in circuitry that cuts off the charge when it is full. Apple could have at least made a sensor to recognise when the battery has stopped accepting a charge so that it would stop showing the charging meter. It scared me to see that meter moving after a Lithium-ion battery has been fully charged. Lithium-ion batteries explode when they are overcharged!

dude, first off...the whole "battery is on a timer" thing is complete crap. no sucessful product could ever monitor battery life on a timer. Plus, think about it...use your ipod a lot in sucession with the lights on and the volume up loud and the contrast dark and see how fast the battery life goes down, then stop using it and watch it go back up!

Second, the ipod comes with a lithium polymer battery which is much different from the lithium ion battery. The lithium polymer can be charged whenever without suffering from memory effects. It also has its OWN ability to stop the charge when its all the way full. It is the newest of the lighter, smaller, slimmer batteries around these days. And by the way, i dont think lithium ion batteries will "explode" so to speak...they may get a little hot and short circuit, but "explode" is a far cry my friend.

I might of been the person you saw that stated the batter charger was on a timer. I did not say the ipod life was on a timer, just that the charger was. If it is not, how come after a few hours the charging bars stay solid, but take it off and quicky re-dock the ipod, the proccess starts all over again. To me, this would seem as though the charger is timed. (Even though the battery is not accepting charge perhaps?)
