Total wireless-ness
Someone else has probably said this, if not why not?? The iPod is a cutting edge gadget, no doubt about it. Apple design is meant to lead the way, innovate. If you ask me, they missed the boat with the third generation. They really should have gone totally wireless. Integrated bluetooth, separate 'pod, remote and 'phones.
Imagine wearing a wrist watch that functions as a fully-fledged control panel for your 'Pod, with LCD screen, perhaps a scroll wheel built into the dial. This would be linked via bluetooth to your 'pod, encased in its iPodArmour deep in your pocket or briefcase or rucksack, far away from scratches and other hazards. And your headphones sitting snugly on your ears, no wires to get caught or ripped out or snagged...
OK, maybe not for this generation, but the next one? How great would that be?
*dreams*

The only problem I have with this is then, what's the point of the iPod being pretty if it's gonna hide in your iPod armor all day? I like pretty things. :)
# 2 Re: Total wireless-ness
Hmm, yeah, well you could still take it out & stroke it, if you want. :)
I dunno, I suppose the control unit (be it a watch or whatever) could be the thing of beauty, plus isn't your current iPod normally hidden from view in a case in your pocket? ;)

Mmm, mintcake...
Okay, you got me. It's in my pocket and I've been stroking it. ;) The pod sure is a conundrum because, on the one hand, it begs to be displayed, and on the other, it begs to be stolen.

I think bluetooth headphones and remote would be the bees knees
# 5 Re: Total wireless-ness
I've been wishing for wireless earbuds for as long as I can remember (long before the iPod was even a twinkle in Apple's eye.) Technologically, it's definately possible ? consider hearing aids and high-tech spy equipment ? and through the miracle of mass production, the cost could be lowered to a viable level.
Come on 3rd parties, this would be a killer product!

Announcing the NeuroPod...a tiny device that attaches to your brain stem, remotely stimulating your aural and optic nerves.
Your media list is displayed as an overlay on your normal visual system. Employing the recent breakthroughs in thought-amplification technology, the entire system is controlled by thought!
Listen to music like you've never heard it before. Forget stereo or 5.1, since it's hooked straight into your brain, sound samples can seem to originate from any location in your 3D world.
Soon to be announced in firmware update 42.1: Rendezvous for the Neuro age...

Yep, For about the past year I have been thinking about bluetooth earphones; small things fitting in your ears that are hard to see (think a cross between an earbud and a hearing aid). That would be DA BOMB!!!
# 8 Re: Total wireless-ness
Folks, can't this be done now with current technology? Has anyone tried this?
Use the iTrip and one of those headsets that have a built-in FM radio. Sync the iTrip to the station on the headset. Now, won't that be a wireless headset? :D
# 9 Re: Total wireless-ness
No, I'm thinking more along the lines of near-invisible wireless earbuds.
And from what I've read about FM transmitters, they're useless (read actual user testimonials, not the BS reviews that come from sponsored sites.)
# 10 Re: Total wireless-ness
sorry but i think this is a bad idea. look how small the remote is. not much bigger than a quarter. it wouldn't take more than a week for post people to lose it. and at $60 a pop (gonna cost more if it's wireless) it's gonna add up.....
# 11 Re: Total wireless-ness
To be honest I use a bluetooth headset with my phone and while it hasn't been designed for hi-fi, I don't think bluetooth could ever handle good sound quality. Add to that the fact that you would be adding *yet another* device to remember to charge... Yikes.

Maybe a stylish dock to charge earphones, remote and drive.
That clock deal was rather interesting. Not very easy to lose, then. And you could also have it display the time! :D :D
Perhaps displaying time and current song per default, and scrolling the dial changes to "iPod view".. then after not touching the controls for a couple of seconds, it's back to displaying time.

I like what I'm hearing! We're thinking along the same lines...
It'll happen sooner or later. Has to.
