no more "do not disconnect" message!

I am sick of the "DO NOT DISCONNECT" message. I feel like telling my 15 GB iPod "Hey, watch your attitude man, i spent 400 bucks on you!" I think a major improvement would be to have a music/firewire toggle. A small switch built into a new iPod dock would switch between the connection to the computer and the music mode. This would eliminate the need to disconnect the iPod if u want to hear the latest tune you put onto it. This would also restructure the "DO NOT DISCONNECT" function, making it that you can disconnect the iPod except when actually transferring files and music, when it would say "Transferring Files, PLEASE Do Not Disconnect" This would be extremely helpful it you powered your dock and then immediately wanted to play music through your stereo speakers. This would also eliminate the nuisance of it trying to connect to the computer every time you simply want to charge it up.

The switch is a good idea, I agree putting the 'pod into the dock to listen to music on your sterio is annoying because you have to unmount it; however I can't see Apple installing a switch on the dock because of aesthetics... they are all for super-simplicity (which makes for a sweet-looking product).

I'm all for choosing your own display warning. I would go for something like:

"Don't touch me - I'm charging"
"If you disconnect me I'm dead"
"Do not disturb"
"Busy - let me do my work in peace"

:-)

you can manually connect and disconnect in linux
the procedure goes like that:

1: plug in (there is no don't disconnect msg)
2: modprobe sbp2 (disconnect msg)
3: mount /mnt/ipod (you can now transfer files)
4: umount /mnt/ipod && rmmod sbp2 (you have your ipod plugged in but without the don't disconnect msg

Under windows XP, the windows 'safely remove hardware' windows tell you (hit the 'properties' button) that in the safe mode (which is default) you can safely unplug your device at any time anyway.

Essentially it REALLY means that a write operation to your pod will be finished before windows tries anything else. With write caching enabled windows will start writing to the pod when it has nothing better to do, which could be anywhere from 1 milisecond to 2 minutes after the write command has been given. Obviously you can not safely yank it while windows still needs to finish writing to it, so safe writes are just more obvious to gauge.

You can safely unplug it while just reading from it or when it's idle I think. (i.e. ignoring the do not disconnect message)

(anyone back me up on this?)

I didnt like not being able to charge it from my comp and to keep having to move the cable from the back of my comp to the ac adaptor @ the other end of the table. So, I just modified my firewire card so the top port (out of 3) only gives power. I cut the traces that go into the chipset...

your insane! why not just unmount from the ipod manager and turn the ipod off and let it charge that way?

i must admit thats some drastic measures LOL

but i totally agree with the moving cables issue, im going to injure myself if i crawl under my desk once more.

The idea of a switch on the dock would be fantastic

but how about a firewire cable with two ends one thats solely for power and the other solely data (just like 4-pin fw ver) so no switching is requied itd be permantly powered by the mains.
I personally would modify a std iPod data cable with an extra firewire plug but i cant afford atm (money-wise) if i wreck the cable.
In fact im sure the new usb2/fwire cable for PC does this except you use usb2 for sync. bleh.
