on/off switch
Having to touch and hold a button for 3 seconds is getting a bit tiresome. The hold switch should have a third setting: Off/On/Hold.

You do know that the iPod automatically shuts off when it's been paused for two minutes, right?
# 2 Re: on/off switch
Yeah, I never turn the thing off, just pause it.
# 3 Re: on/off switch
I'm using the black case that came with mine... I have to slide it out to reach the buttons. Annoying.

Why not just pause it using the remote ?

eh, who needs another button on the iPod? its beauty is its simplicity. no need to turn off anyway.

I don't use the remote extension cord. It just adds to the inconvenience. They've made them long enough for Yao to listen to mp3s with an iPod taped to his Nikes.
Why not make a switch that does exactly what you want it to - turn on and off the iPod?
The missing switch is poor design - like Apple's cube Mac and the one-button (and now, no-button) mouse. They're only pleasing to think about when you're meditating next to your rock garden or drinking Kool-Aid.

haha that's funny. I do agree that the third option to make the ipod turn off with the hold switch would be great. And to whoever said "it would make the overall appearance of the ipod more complex looking" which i think is not true because technically its the same button maybe it would be a little longer? I like the sleep function when i want to use the ipod fast (in car mainly) but it also drains the battery life...which sucks as it is
# 8 Re: on/off switch
Uh. The "sleep function" is the on/off funtion. Letting it go to sleep on its own and pressing/holding the play button to turn it "off" are exactly the same thing. Your battery is not draining any more either way.

Hey, I love the one button/no button mice. Not so great if you're one-handed, but if you're a Photoshop pro (for an instance) you're more than used to letting your left hand do the shifting. I don't think it's poor design, just different. (On a side note, I use both PCs and Macs and I've found that some PC-supplied mice are just too huge.) As for the cube mac, well...so many people dis 'em, so few have actually used one. Poor maligned cube mac...yeah, it had problems, but at least someone was trying to do something different in computer design for once.
But back to the topic at hand...yes, an "off" position on the hold switch would be nice. There are times when I want the pod to go off and I really don't feel like waiting around. Case in point, when my g3 15GB recently froze. I would have *liked* to turn it off immediately to see if that helped, but I couldn't. I had to wait around to see if it might go to sleep on its own. On the other hand, an actual off switch could be problematic in the same way that it's not good to shut down your computer from the hardware switch as opposed to using the software.

Great line. However, the 3-position on-off-hold switch would be horrible. It would be way to easy to accidently shut off the machine when you simply wanted to turn hold on or off. I have an alarm clock with multi-position switches; I hate that "feature" of it.

scabmettler: Let me say it again: The "sleep function" is the on/off function.
There is no difference between the state the iPod's in after you press and hold the Play button for two seconds (hardly an inconvenience) and the state it's in after you leave it paused for two minutes. The only benefit of an Off switch would be that you wouldn't have to wait a whole two seconds for the thing to go to sleep. Whoopee. Worth another interface element? I think not.
# 12 Re: on/off switch
iPod can never be shutoff literally. It only "sleeps".
Its not needed, battery life is fine for me. Charges during upload as well which is a bonus. I can charge during shower and breakfast in the morning and have 8 good hours of music for a 3 hr train ride :)

ephraim: Let *me* say it again: "I wanted to force the iPod to shut down and not wait for it to go to sleep (which it wouldn't do because it was frozen)."
sheesh. Why the attitude?
# 14 Re: on/off switch
Um. I'm not trying to exude any sort of "attitude" here; I'm trying to communicate the fact that the "off"/"shut down" feature you're clamoring for doesn't exist, and won't ever exist in the future, because the iPod doesn't turn off. Ever. If you can't make it sleep for some reason (i.e., it's frozen), then you simply do what everyone else does quite handily in that situation: reboot it by pressing and holding Play and Menu at the same time.

It would be to ez if it was a simple slide. Some digital cameras using diskettes and mini cd's have a special type of switch so that if u want to eject it, in this case turn off, you would have to slide it up and then make it go on off.
