My Wish: CROSSFADING + SCRATCHING
The only thing needed for the iPod to transform it into a portable turntable is CROSSFADING and SCRATCHING capabilities!
Don't you think itll be amazing? Crossfading between songs and all, and using the touch wheel to scratch?
I think its pretty simple to program right? Hey YOU! If you work for Apple, make sure they make us a firmware upgrade with all this stuff!
What do you think?  :D

I'm with you on the crossfading. That would be a nice feature.

If you REALLY need to scratch that itch, Visit Native Instruments and Stanton, and get their hardware software combo, which you could use with your iPod as the storage device.
Its a gizmo that uses time code on vinyl, to allow you to use turntables to control in real time, any digital music file, such as those on your iPod or in iTunes. Scratch away.

Indeed, I want crossfading so bad!!! I really dislike having to hear a 10 second pause between tracks. And scratching seems like a feature few people would want/use, but it sounds wild!

Here is more along the same lines in regards to crossfading (with matching beats)

You could use it to help create playlists for your iPod at least.
I've always been of the mind that the randomizing feature built into the pod might be using a bit of AI to look for similar tempos and timbres anyway... I have gotten some great random mixes.
Personally, I don't need crossfading.. right now there is a gap that is probably much shorter than what I am used to generally being between program material on vinyl and CDs... I can live with that, as I have in the past.
And regarding scratching... it probably conserves iPod battery that we can go to a time code part of a song without auditioning it at the same time... and at best, with the hardware within the pod, if you could hear it, you would probably be hearing that CD type of preview anyway, samples every few seconds, not anything sped up or reversed as analog media might provide.
Don't try to turn a pocket lighter into a precision stove.
If something was going to be added to the iPod, which could easily be done, I would ask for recording. Which is probably going to come with another charging base station, if rumors pan out, just not something standalone and portable.

Well ok, may be scratching is just too much... But I really think crossfading would just add the cream to the pie!! What do you peeps think?

This is actually a really good idea. If they could invent a cueing system, and eliminate any pause between tracks you would have a portable djing device. And if you got an iTrip (or any FM transmitter) you can be the DJ wherever you go.
At the moment if you jump tracks on your ipod that arent in the same playlist or album then you get a bit of a pause. There should be a way to 'pre-load' the next track you want while you are still listening to another one.

I think you might need more processing and memory management than the ipods chipset can handle and it might shorten battery life, by having to read from RAM and disk in a manner differently than it is presently doing. (the change in such management has already been blamed in theory for the shorter batter life in the 3rd gen iPods)
But I hear all sort of things about what can be done with the iPods brains, such as it being able to encode MP3 on the fly from analog sources.
What is the musical choice of the listener that cannot live without crossfading? Electronica/Dance?
Really, that microsecond pause between songs is a lot better than some of the gaps some CD burners would place between songs.

They should definatley not have scratching on an ipod. The amount of scratching keyrings, watches, films and all sorts of rubbish they make these days is ridicoulos, all it is is a squeeky sound.
It does actually sound good when done on turntables, but all the gimmicks to come from it are cheap and tacky. It could never be that good on an ipod anyway.
The cueing and crossfading should definatley be considered by Apple. Taking an ipod around is so much easier than taking vinyl. They could start a new revolution in dance music. They could even have a bpm meter on the ipod.
