OverModeration

Something I've noticed, a lot of threads get quickly locked because it discusses a popular subject. It's not that it's that much of a bad thing, but trying to consolidate threads results in one having to wade through pages and pages of posts in said consolidated thread.

I know it's hard to get the balance right but I for one never look wholly through the longer threads and even if I do I end up replying only to the original post, which may at that time have been answered again and again in the thread.

Just a thought.

I understand where you're coming from, and I used to agree with you, but after hanging around here awhile, it became obvious that if they didn't do this you'd have 10, 20, or in some instances many, many more threads that were identical. There are times when people will post indentical threads three times in the course of a day...So, while it isn't perfect, I think what they are doing is the best way to go--and it really doesn't take that long to go through an entire thread, most of the replies are short.

Once a thread gets too long, the mods lock it, and start a new one (although the old thread is still available to read)...

columbo,
If I read your 'complaint' correctly, the problem arises when members post the same topic over and over again without doing a bit of reading/searching back through the forums, to see if this subject has already been discussed.
That is when a topic may be locked and the poster directed to the thread they are duplicating, or their thread being merged (a new function which we didn't have over on the old forum) with an already active thread on the same subject.
Please be aware we do not go through the boards locking or merging threads willy-nilly. It is usually only after it appears someone hasn't read the forum guidelines/tips and posted a regular question e.g "How do I make my iPod do XYZ?" when this same question is half a dozen posts down the same page!

We try to keep the forums 'tidy' to make finding information easy, but sometimes it seems that is not enough.
I hope you find the info you are looking for without too much trouble, although sometimes it does require a bit of work on the readers side :)
I hope this goes some way to answer your concerns.

This thread has been sitting idle for over 24 hours. I'm going to have to lock it, move it, merge it, split it, unlock it, and ban everyone who posted to it. :D

if you think these forums are bad ... check out applefritter ... the now standard response to most questons (from moderators) is "you know that thing called google ... use it" ... but to be fair alot of new users just ask the questions without searching in google first ... when alot of the answers are easy to find it get a bit boring saying the same thing over and over again ...
